Example of the inflated prices on MB diesels in Michigan! Pics!

I was driving around the block today by my residence, and noticed a stunning 1985 300TD for sale .....of course I had to stop and say hello to it. The owner must be insane....$9,800....it has a little bit of rust (very minor, just on the rear fender)....and only 125,000 miles. Inside is mint, chrome roof rack is mint, wheels are spotless and perfect, has the third row seat. Blue tex interior.....its sitting level, no leaks under it.....VERY nice car. The price is WAY too high though. I am tempted to give them a call and learn the story. Their phone number is in my pics....so feel free to call them yourself. I am not affiliated with the owner, just thought I'd share the extreme prices people think these are worth around here! For reference, I paid $6700 less for my 300E with approx the same miles, and NO rust, and its newer...deals are hard to find around here. This car has Tyler written all over it.

Here's some pics I took with my phone:

Oh, and if you look at the picture of the car from across the street, you can see the reflection of my SD.

Supply and demand? I mean how many 1985 anythings are still alive and relatively rust free in MI?
I wonder if this was a southern car that made it's way up north...

Down in DC this would be a Cheap Wagon entry

Its probably a doctors car that sat in a garage most of its life, the rubber on it is in mint condition, even around the windows and such.

I don't know about a CWC entry.....but it'd fit in the "spiffy rare wagon" club.

I just found their local craigslist ad:

http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/cto/1179189783.html

So very descriptive.

No, this is a case of monopoly and entitlement. In Michiga, it's always been " You'll pay my price or lump it!" People here have an inflated sense of entitlement. They have been brought up to feel they are all special.

Guess what We are all equally special in the universe, which makes us no better than any other blob of protoplasm.

In 6 months, after the guy has no house because it's been foreclosed, he'll be living in it.

Then it will be: house for sale $ 9,800.00 Cash only.

If it's Detroit, that house would be as overpriced as the car.

He is not looking for a mercedesshop forum type of customer. I live next to the highest per capita income town in the state -if I sell an old collector car, it will be there--when things get better. Where the folks have more money than inside enthusiasm for old cars.

Isn't it a bit mean?

There is no unsaleable car, only unsaleable price.

I'm a 3 time cheap wagon club member. You must be thinking of when it comes time for me to sell. Though I never could have dreamed of getting that price for any of them.

There was a very similar '82 wagon with 80,000 miles that supposedly sold for $10,500 recently. It had rust, and no AC.

I'd pay 7-8K for a low mileage excellent example if everything works and no rust. Especially an 85 TD.

Resale profit aside, I wouldn't want that car even for free. IMO those wagons are hideous from behind. Now if you really want a particular car and the asking price is too high, it still doesn't hurt to give the owner a call and make an offer. Then give it a week or two, and the owner might accept it or something close to it, assuming there are no better offers.

It took almost a year for the 6.9 to get cheap enough for me to buy it. A month or so for the Defiant, a 1983 300D. I just kept asking about it.

I meant for what it is: a pretty darn mint wagon Not so much the price, though I imagine you could wear them down.

Since its so close I'll be able to watch the sale sloooooooowly proceed. We'll see what it gets down to. If its still for sale in a year and I have more $$ then we'll see!

One of the most stunning parts of it is the condition of the rubber bits and the roof rack, its the most shiny chrome I've ever seen!

Very true. There really isn't much of a market for old MB diesels. I've seen very well priced diesels on craigslist for weeks, sometimes months. For $2000, you get a nice diesel. For $4000, you get an awesome diesel!..anything more, is really pushing it. Not saying that they are not worth it. There just isn't much of a market for them.

No it's NOT. That's how people think here. And it has ruined the state.

They all feel they're special and not required to do anything except what they want. It's all ok until you're caught. Look at the former mayor.

Case in point: A Detroit City council woman has been paying 68.00 / year on property taxes on her Tudor style mansion, because someone apparently " made a mistake" for the last 12 years.

Her neighbors have all been paying about 50 times that these past years. No one can figure out how the "administrative error" was made...

When confronted by local news papers, she said, " Wouldn't you do the same thing?"

NO, I wouldn't.

I think that's bad someone is selling a 76 450SL for....wait...$45,000!!! ...I wonder if it's actually $5000 with $40,000 worth of replacement wire harnesses and replacement catalytic converters.

I kinda feel the same way about Milwaukee sometimes....entitlement is a good description.

As for the city councilwoman, did she not think anyone would ever notice? They ought to back tax her with fines going back 12 years....that would even things up!
