throw out bearing squeal 240D

My throw out bearing has been squealing intermitently and happening more often to the point of being annoying. It only squeals with the clutch engaged. Any cool tricks to stop the squeal without having to pull the tranny & replace the part?

LOL,
Praying for miracles !!!!
While you have it out be sure to either replace or grease the pilot bearing in the back of the engine....
If it is the plain bushing kind you can fill it with grease and hit a close fitting shaft placed into it to use hydraulic pressure to remove it...

speed shifting without using the clutch would avoid the squeal

Agree. I had a 240D for several years, and when the throwout bearing began to squeal there was no question. Replace it. And replace the clutch disc and pressure plate at the same. Have the flywheel machined.

It's cheaper to do the job correctly the first time. And this job is not difficult.

Replace it before it causes any damage.

Yes, here's a "cool trick:"

Remove driveshaft
Remove transmission
Replace pilot bearing
Replace throwout bearing
Inspect and replace clutch and pressure plate as necessary.

There are no short cuts. Don't ignore warning signs like this. Such problems RARELY cure themselves on their own. Quite the opposite is the case in that you should attend to such problems immediately so that they don't get worse.

Noises are the cars equivalent to your bodies pain. When you have a pain it is your body trying to tell you that something is wrong that must be dealt with. Don't ignore such signs from your vehicle OR your body.

As stated, this is not a difficult job, heres a few things that help. 1) remove the clutch slave from the bell housing, wire it up out of the way and you wont have to bleed the system. 2) leave the flex disc on the tranny, wedge the drive shaft end up out of the way, tranny comes out easy. 3) leave the cross member on the tranny, letting go the two 13mm bolts. Also an impact wrench is handy for removing flex coupling bolts. Have fun

Save the pressure plate by replacing the $30 throwout before it damages the $250 pressure plate.

Yup, me too. I have my throwout and pilot bearings ordered, so I will probably be doing this one next weekend. I'l be changing out the flex disc, too. Good times.

Hey thanks for the "cool tricks" tips everyone! How many hours would you say the job is from start to finish w/o a lift, on jack stands? This is a car I'm selling so I may not do it.
It stopped squealing the last time I drove it. It seems to be humidity related, quiet when dry, squeals when wet.

Forcedinduction, where you been? What's that on your head? Is that really you?

Yeah, just pass the problem on to some innocent, unsuspecting soul. Let them deal with it.

It won't get better. It will make lots of noise with each application of the clutch, even more noise, and then chew up the the pressure plate. If you don't disclose it to the buyer, they will curse your soul in a short number of days or weeks.
