Question 617 melts fuse 11 in 1985 300SD... what's the scoop?

Finally got to a test run on the working A/C in my 300SD today... mid 30s at the vents when cruising.

Bad news, when the A/C blower is on HIGH along with the compressor on and the other doo-dad (evap sender I think) the car decides to melt Fuse 11. I can only assume the extra two things working again are adding just a tad too much amperage for this circuit and messing things up as I never have had this before occur... car hasn't had working AC since I've owned it. Laugh if you must.

I can only attribute this to the blower pulling too much amperage on high speed... so does this mean it's dying? If so, no problem I'll just replace it and motor on. Anyone been able to remove the cage successfully and installed on a new motor? I did on my F150 once and it was a real pain in the ass.

Spoke with JimmyL on here this afternoon and he said there's some sort of fix, like what you see on all the late W126s, that adds a larger external fuse block with heavy wiring from MB. Anyone have pics/a PN for this? I'd like to get this ordered and installed ASAP. Also where it installs in the fuse panel would be helpful. Does it just go around Fuse 11's pins?

Replacing the blower is pretty easy, if you find a good one.

I'd just buy a new one unless I find a verified newer used one. But I'm not going to go out in this heat and scour the junkyards to save $50. BTDT.

Take the blower out and re-lube it, see if that works. The harder that motor has to work the more amps it will pull.

What make you think it is the blower drawing too much current?

1) Is the fuse the correct amperage?
2) I would never put a higher amperage fuse, inside or outside the fuse box. You could do more damage as the fuse is suppose to burn when overloaded.
3) Have you tried another correct rated fuse and run the fan at low speed?
4) Blower is easy to replace just below the glove box. Is it damaged?
5) The blower is on a separate fuse in the 300SDL. An external fuse, hard to find PITA flat fuse just outside the fuse box. I would imagine it is the same as the 300SD.

I do not know what is fuse 11 for off hand. I will take a look this evening.

Good luck.

I just performed this operation on my 85 380se yesterday.
The operation being the addition of a MB original wiring harness update.
Part Number is MB# 126 540 30 13.
It consists of a 30 amp fuse like the one in the GP relay in a separate holder with two wires attached to it.
The original fuse in number 11 is a 25 amp and the older the blower motors get the more amperage they draw.
Mercedes updated this on mid year 86 126 models and moved the fuse for the blower out of the fuse box.
Here is what you do:

#1. order the kit
#2. disconnect battery
#3. open fuse box and remove all relays
#4. unscrew the two Phillips head screws on front of fuse box and tilt the fuse box up so you can see underneath it.
It will become very obvious what you need to do.
A wire comes into the top of the fuse holder and is held by a screw and then the circuit is completed by another wire that screws into the bottom of the fuse holder.
#5 to make things easier I unscrewed the wires from fuse number 12 which is just above 11 in the box.
write down what goes where.
#6. you will notice that there are rubber plugs that lead out from the fuse box and this is where the other wires are routed out of the fuse box.
Pick an empty rubber plug and make a hole in the plug and insert the ends of the harness through the hole to the point where the red tape on the harness is.
Unscrew the two screws on fuse number 11 and put the new wires onto the screws and then screw them into the fuse holder.
Then replace the wires that you removed from fuse holder number 12.
#7. flip the fuse box down and screw the two screws into the fuse box at the front.
#8. replace the relays
#9. remove the fuse from number 11.
#10. Now your blower motor is using the 30 amp fuse in the new holder.
#11. I tie wrapped it to the vacuum line that goes to the brake booster, but Mercedes actually screwed it to the second firewall in my 86 300sdl.
#12. Reconnect the battery and test it out.
#13 . It worked great on my 85 380se.

It really was a pretty easy fix.

Good Luck

Yes there is an external fuse link that jumps the original fuse by connecting under the the block at the terminals. Part number 126 540 30 13

You will be able to put in a 30 amp fuse instead of the 25 amp.

With that said, I think you still might want to check out the health of the blower. Maybe you just need new brushes.

Two obvious heavy gauge wires.
