!90D 4 speeds?

Okay, this is starting to bother me, after searching for 20 minutes I couldn't find any definitive answers, partly due to this statement:

Quote:
The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search: 4
But after a long discussion with a friend, he told me that all manual 190D's available in the US (not including grey market models) were 5 speeds. I've come across a few listings on craigslist and a few cars here that claim to be a 190D 4 speed, but with either no pictures or no clear pictures. Anyone want to help clear this up as this is really starting to drive me up the wall.

The automatics are 4 speed transmissions. Could that be part of the confusion?

I'm aware that there's 4 and 5 speed transmissions, but I've come across ebay and Craigslist cars that claim they have a 4 speed manual transmissions that make no claim about grey market models. Which led me to the hypothesis that early 190D 2.2's were 4 speed manual and the 2.5 had 4 and 5 speed manuals.

My '85 190D 2.2 is a five speed manual. If you believe everything you read on Craig's List and eekbay...I have a bridge I want to talk to you about. As mentioned, autos are four, manuals are five. Does the rest of the seller's description sound like they are pretty competent?

I just spent about an hour or so with the on-line version of EPC, looking for a non-US part. Didn't see anything about four speed manuals on a W201 chassis.

I generally don't believe everything I read, but I never thoroughly searched for a W201 either , and the times I've found a manual, I've come across 4 speeds, so I just thought they were available in the US at some point.

And then I find a 87 Euro 190D 2.2 4 speed in Seattle

Lotta miles on that one. Needs a bit of attention too, and not just the head gasket. Definitely gray market! Everything's manual, even the sunroof. U.S. models never came with cloth upholstery. Love the climate control on this one. Might be worth getting just for that (to transplant to one in better condition). His "fog lights" are cute. At least he says one is broken in the text.

I would have said four speed sticks were available here but I don't know.

I believe its only early 2.2 models that had a 4-speed manual as the base option, after 86 or so it should all be 5's standard.
