Thanks toomany, that part looks the same, I think my problem is on the other end. When I pull the latch from inside the car the hood no longer pops and the plastic pull lever no longer sticks out. I have to fish for it out and pull it from the grill, I need help figureing out what it could be?

Start inside the cabin at the release, you may be able to pull on the cable.
I may have an extra release handle, I'll look for it tomorrow.

I did not explain the situation clearly. The pull lever inside the cabin is OK. all problem is in the hood latch contraption on the hood.

Try lifting the hood a touch after you pop it open with the lever. Some of these 123 hoods don't pop up by they are loose. If you can lift the hood up often the release handle will pop out.

Answer

Inspect the hood hinge pivot pin, where it connects to the body in the spring trough.
The W123 hood hinge pivot pin tends to corrode there, becoming very stiff, and eventually locking solid.
Early symptom is the hood failing to pop up, the end result rips the pivot mount bushing out of the body.
Due to lack of lube/maintenance and Michigan salt/corrosion I have been forced to repair/weld too many of these through the years.

Have a great day.

Okay, here's another shot from under hood, and inside parts.
You may be able to fish a coat hanger in there to release the hood and as whunter mentions, lube it up, see if that helps.

I had a problem with my hood not opening once and the problem was that there was not enough upwards resistance on the hood to make the latch unlatch... sounds strange, but it has something to do with what actually makes the hood "pop" when you pull the lever.

What I did was bunch up a leather work glove and wedge it between the front of the hood and the body of the car above the headlights I think. I put it in there tight so that I could feel that it was pushing the hood upwards, perhaps even one glove on each side of the latch (left and right). Then when I pulled the lever, it finally popped and I opened it. I found that the rubber pads that are on the front underside of the hood to provide upward resistance were non-existent.

I just got some rubber foot ends from the hardware store and stuck them over the pegs that stick out the underside of the hood. I also put a piece of stick on rubber in the little indents where these pads usually make contact with the body of the car in front of the engine bay. No problems opening since then.
