Rear suspension noise

240D 1977.
When driving the car at very slow speeds, 5 mph, on rough pavement I hear this very dull, muted sound coming from the back, can not locate it, but I am wondering if this means some worn part on the suspension, how do I check the shocks for noise? Is there a sway bar that could have worn rubber bushings?
Any other thoughts?

Vahe

Is the noise only on rough pavement? Are you sure its not just your tires making the noise? Have you went under the car to look at all the bushings and such? If not do so. Also check all the suspension back there. And if you want to check the shocks for noise simply push the back end of the car up and down and listen (this is the way I have always done it if its wrong I am sure someone will correct me) hope that helps.

This might sound crazy and maybe too simple, but are you sure it isn't the spare tire cover in the trunk? The way mine flops around when I hit bumps would make anyone think something is wrong in the back. When I have something sitting on it in the trunk I hear nothing at all.

Check the sway bar links in back, a visual inspection should tell you if they need replacing.

Good suggestions. The sway bar is the prime suspect, I will start with that and move down the list.

My sway bar links do need replacing. Visually they looked fine. It was the grab and shake test that recreated the same noise issues I have.
