Note to self. Ask for a pic of the shifter.

Yes, EXCELLENT advice!

Pics of critcal areas are a must if you got to travel aways to see it in person . . .

Also Winmutt phrased it very well . . . "Dont both asking if they are sure its a 5 speed, ask them are they sure its a 5 speed and not a 4speed + R. Most Americans drive autos and there for think of all manuals as 5 speeds (since no mass produced car I know of has had a 4spd trans in 20 years almost)."

It's an unbelievable pet peeve of mine, when craigslist sellers knowingly or unwittingly misrepresent their cars.
I've come to realize that in the northeast, when people say rust-free, they really mean any absence of 1 foot holes SHOWING. I've wasted unknown hours just driving to look at cars full of rust.

Esepcially if they have driven it they would probably notice...

Diagnosis: Retarded. Can't count to 5.

I saw a African Gray Parrot on PBS who can identify numbers and count up to 6 so what does that say about people :D

Thanks for saving me the trip. I called him Monday and asked if it was really a 5 speed and after he swore it was I told him I would be by to look at it Friday. My son has a 240D 4 speed that we put a 5 cylinder in and now it needs another gear in the tranny or some 3.07 gears in the rear.

For anyone wanting to do a 617 $WD swap into a jeep-landcruiser-toyota truck............I have a granny gear 5 speed to use with a divorced transfer case setup!

I nominate the seller for a darwin award!

I found another 5 speed... not. A dealership was selling a nice beige 240D for $900 advertised as a 5 speed manual. I asked them to look at the shifter again and got the response, "apparently it is a 4 speed".

Need to start an almost-5-speed club.

"Speed" implies forward gears, so technically it's not a 5-speed.

its still a 5 speed 4 foward, 1 reverse. It just dont have 5 foward gears

DieselAddict 06-09-2009 03:10 PM

Yes, I get that, but you're changing the meaning of the word "speed" as commonly used in this context.

Squiggle Dog 06-09-2009 04:08 PM

Okay, fine--I'm looking for a 717 6 speed transmission.

barry123400 06-10-2009 12:23 AM

Good. Any simple five speed ahead transmissions you stumble across send my way. :D
