617 intake/exhaust gasket replacement...question about oil line

My '81 300TD (OM617) has a leak at the intake and exhaust gasket (I believe because it has a nasty whistle under load and lots of exhaust noise too) and so I was planning on pulling the manifold/turbo assembly out and renewing all of the gaskets between the head and the exhaust pipe at once.

I read the manual but it is unclear to me whether the oil feed line to the turbo needs to be removed, or loosened at the oil filter housing. One set of instructions seems to say "disconnect the line at the turbo and loosen the line at the O/F housing and clamps" and one set doesn't address that but simply says to disconnect the line at the turbo. Can the turbo/manifold come out without disturbing the oil feed line's connection at the bottom of the oil filter housing or not?

If you were really slick, I bet you could slip a new gasket in just by loosening the manifolds and removing the oil clamps. But you're not going to get the surfaces clean, and you risk damaging that oil line.

The only thing you need to do is remove the oil line from the turbo and the clamps that hold the oil line to the manifold. The rest is a matter of getting the manifolds out of your way so you can clean the head. Pulling the entire assembly means adding a considerable amount of tedious and annoying mini-tasks to the job.

The intake and exhaust both share the same gasket.

**unfortunately, the pictures show a cali version, there should not be that great of a discrepancy besides the arrangement of filters.

Thanks for the response...I guess I could try that but I was thinking of pulling it all out to also replace the exhaust gasket at the turbo inlet and outlet at the same time and also repair the oil drain...but you're right it would make sense to try and just do the manifold gasket first and not mess around with the others if they are OK. Thanks again.

It might be a good idea ounce the Manifolds are off to take a Staight Edge across the sealing surfaces and see if the maniflod is warped.
I know on gasers the exhaust Manifold sometimes get warped and they send them out to be surface ground flat again.
