strut bolts w201 broken
I snapped off one of the bolts on the front strut of my 201 and spent yesterday with an easyout. A lot of drill bits. A chainsaw file. I'm now ready to run a tap through the residue. THe question is-- what size tap should I buy? The bolt head was 18mm. Thanks!

Hmmm?
Off the top of my head, I don't know. Can you check the threads on a good bolt? If memory serves me, there are 3 bolts that hold the strut to the spindle "knuckle". Did you pull the spindle off the car, or is it still connnected at the lower ball joint?

I'm working with the hub still on the car. Mainly it looks like a can of worms to pull it, although I may have to in the end. I cant tell if thats easy to do or not without trying it, and the odds of snapping another bolt off are enough to keep me from trying it. I have the bolt so I can test taps at the store.
There was blue locktite on the other five bolts, so this one (the last of the six total) was just following Murphys law of part removal-- in removing a part, all the bolts but one will be easy to remove, and the last one will take three days.... |

Blue stuff
That blue thread locker comes pre-installed on the bolts as supplied by MB. If you can get the broken portion of the bolt out and get clean threads tapped, you deserve congratulations.
If all else fails, a junkyard spindle shouldn't be too difficult to find. SteveM

My fall back will be to redrill and thread larger. We tested the existing thread at the local hw store. It takes an M12 tap. I had to order the tap for Thursday.

To close up this thread. I got a m12 x 1.5mm tap and very slowly retapped the hole after drilling out most of the broken bolt. I started with a 1/8" bit and drilled up to 3/8" 1/16th at a time. I was able to drill out the bolt without removing the hub because it was the front bolt; the back one wouldnt have been possible without removal of the hub assy. Tap in a little, retract, clean out shards of steel, tap in a little more, retract. Use oil on the tap.
So after many hours of labor, the bolt hole is clean, the new strut is installed, and I'm stylin! |
