Vacuum Pump Compatibility

I have a 1978 300d NA and the vacuum pump failed. I bought the rebuild kit but I don't have the time to rebuild it. So I ordered a new pierburg pump. I went out to see if it was the same as the one on the car and to my surprise it was not. The new pump only has one out put line but the old one has two lines one going to the air cleaner and one to the brake booster. I know that my 1985 300d has the new pump's set up. I am wondering if the new pump will replace the old one.

I have gone the other way but not the way you need to go. I personally like the older style, "diaphragm" pump better.

I have answered my own question. NO the newer style of pump will not replace the older. The power steering belt rubs on the housing.

Would changing to a longer or shorter Belt help?

Question for anyone: Do they even make New Diaphragm Vacuum Pumps?

They do make new pumps and they cost 376.88 with out shipping. I was mistaken when I said that the new pump will not work. I rebuilt the original pump and the power steering belt is still rubbing on it . I guess the PO did not put the right belt on it because I spent 3 hours trying to adjust the belt. So my question is what is the right length for a NA 1978 300D power steering pump belt?

I do not know what length the belt is and out here the Auto parts places do not seem to have that belt measuring tool that they used to use.

Meaning that if the length of your belt is not written on the out side and the writing is still readable thay cannot match up you belt easily with out looking up the make, model, and year and so on.

I take the old belt to the Auto Parts and have them look up a new one using the make, year, engine, and mode and see what the come up with and compare it to the belt you have.
It is a pain to return parts but if that does not fit you can return it.
