I hate fixing stuff

why? because something else breaks.

replaced the window regulator on the SDL today.. that was a frign hoot.. the fun part was putting the door back together, I think I lost a bolt for the door handle mount, dont ask why I removed it. So I had to improvise.

I forgot to pull the wires through for the puddle light, **** that im not going back in.. The mirror plastic finish piece broke when I removed it because I thought it was holding up my removal process, then the panel that goes over the seat buttons will not sit flush, that **** is broken too..

I hate working on cars now.. I see why people that can afford it send cars to a mechanic I enjoy none of this crap...

and the fun part is on the way back from the grocery store I tapped some old mans bumper, it was clear to go so he was starting to go and I was going with and then he frign stops.. I was going like 2-3 mph nothing significant. I hear the pop of my bumper(its already broken on the passenger side) so that took all of the energy. We get out, look at the tiny scuff on his bumper that disappeared when I ran my thumb over it and They were nice and just asked for my name and I told them I will get it buffed and the car detailed just have them call me when it is good for them. So, I think I'm good.. but I have insurance but damn it man... ..

damn it man.. damn it.

One? Aside from the fuel issue on the SDL....whats wrong with the other two? I am guessing the only running one is the SD right? (because the 617 is awesome )

Door panels and such on the W126 are easy.....I can have one on and off in probably under 10 minutes.

Now....the W124....I still haven't figured out how the door panels come off on those....any hints??

You must have been tailgating to bump the guy's bumper! No sympathy for tailgaters!

SD has been in the garage for a year waiting for me to finish the front end work and the new radiator.

The second '86 has never been vetted............and isn't registered.

Only the '87 runs..........

I feel your pain, although I always seem to go back to doing repairs even though I don't have to. Usually once I fix something, and all the things I broke in the process of fixing it, I feel a sense of having conquered something. The whole flex disc/driveshaft things on my 240, though, I have to admit kind of knocked the spirit out of me. When I really think about it though, what frustrates me more than anything is not having the time, the place, the weather, the right tools, etc., to do what should be a simple job. Usually if I break something, it's because I was rushing to get it done in time to wash up and get to work, or because I was trying to do it after work at 3 a.m. in my tiny dark garage.

Right now my 300D needs an oil change, has a steering creak, needs new diff mounts, and I would like to change the flex discs as a precaution. The 240D needs a valve adjustment and a coolant flush (which would be a good idea on the 300D, too), a seat revival and rust patching. The Jeep needs a brake bleed, or maybe a new master cylinder after I finally put new rotors/pads on it. I finally got a day off work without other obligations and it poured and thunderstormed all day. So all I can do is sit here with my cat watching Nine Inch Nails in HiDef, wondering when/if I can ever get any of that stuff done and wondering if it's all worth it.

But ... I know when it's done, or some of it (it's never ALL done, is it?), I'm going to look at my sparkling 300D and my sort-of functional 240D and even my silly Jeep and feel a sense of pride and ownership that you just don't get from throwing down a credit card on the mechanic's counter.

I've found that theres a definite order of operations that needs to be followed when working on a W126. Trying to fix something halfhearted only leads to pain and tears.

ehhh im going to be at my mechanics on saturday so I'll have him help me fix my mistake.. but I do have a working window again.. The old regulator failed in to places, the gear stripped and the upper left mount sheared off the regulator so it could twist in the door and caused stress fractures.

Don't you have the BMW to drive Brian? lol

Oh yeah ... and I do want to add, there is one thing much worse than fixing things: Not fixing them despite your best efforts. If it ends up fixed when you're done, something went right at some point.

Exactly. Everything must be fixed as the engineers in Sindelfingen intended!!

I guess it helps to like doing mechanical things....I am actually looking forward to re-doing my axle boots later this week.

Definitely.

And, I'll add that making a quick attempt to fix it fast will always result in a disaster. Unless there is some miracle, any decent repair takes a week to accomplish and the vehicle is out of service.

I compress that week of work into a full day (as in, 15 hours straight) of work....from the early morning till late into the night. When I did my motor mounts and oil cooler and lines I finished up around 2:30-3am.... I was tired.
