How to identify?

I have a diesel engine that I just got from a friend, and I don't know anything about it, except the head cover has Mercedes emblems stamped in either end:

It's a 4 cylinder diesel, siamesed 1-2 and 3-4 ports.
Naturally Aspirated
Apparently came from a Reefer unit in the 80's.
It has approx a 3-5 gallon (yes, GALLON) oil pan.
It has 4 flat mounts on the oil pan, that appear to be about the size of full-size truck body mounts.
The injection pump is on the exhaust side
Intake and exhaust are on different sides.
facing the front of the engine, intake (and injectors) are on the right side, exhaust on the left.
6 bolt flywheel, approx 12" or so.

That's about all I know about it... I have no idea how to identify it, what the specs for it are, or how much HP it should have.

I was told by one mechanic that it would probably be about 35-40 HP.

Thanks for any information!

Take a photo but it sounds like an OM 636 of the reefer/stand-in variety, courtesy of the Marienfeld plant

Send me a photo, maybe I can tell you, I seem to be collecting them of late.

How come no one ever gives ME diesel engines with Mercedes stamps on them?

YES! It looks like the 636 takes the cake!

So now, I know what engine it is... how do I find specs/service instruction for it?

I need to know how many HP and etc, what parts to get, what they'll cost me, what will interchange with it, how to make more power if I need it, blah blah blah.

I am curious about this. What gearbox will you use?
The only ones that I know whose clutch housings fit were made between 1936 and 1958. As you will discover, the unique placement of the starter can limit this.

If you needed a small diesel engine and trans for a city car, I have several 190D, ten cc above these, that can be turboed, because they are
ohv and can run faster, plus they are made for highway speeds up to max of 75.

I now have several too many small diesels, including whole cars I want to sell if you want to buy something.

I just collected too many and it's time to thin the herd.

I'm talking 1000 or under for a running vehicle with a good frame that needs cosmetics but is basically there. Most need brake work, like wheel cylinders ot brake hoses, but run.

I have driven at least two before the brakes went and I lost storage, so there you are.

They used to use the mentioned Engine on Thermokings and Thermoking has a website. You may get Info from them.
Since it was a Generator Engine to begin with the Governor is set up for that. I believe it would make a better Boat Engine than a Wheeled Vehicle Engine.

When hooked to a Refer unit the Engine idles until the Refer needs power; as it takes the load it goes from idle to around 1800 rpms (I do not remember exactly anymore). The Governer is set up to maitain a certain speed under load.

Well, there have been serious changes in plans since I started working with this engine. I can't find much for info on it, and TK has been NO help what soever. (Unless I want to buy a new reefer unit, of course.)

No gearbox will actually bolt to this particular engine except those meant for the OM636, but adapter plates are pretty easy to make.

I'm more thinking about using this engine for a tractor project now, though, rather than for a car, mostly because it's a very large, heavy engine, that produces (not enough) power for keeping a car at 55-60MPH. It would burn too much fuel trying to stay at too high of an RPM to really do anything useful in a car.

(I had originally planned on using a gearbox from a PT Cruiser, which would almost bolt into my van, and could easily be adapted to the engine.)

Thanks for the offer, strelnik, but I don't have the $1000, and you're like 2 day's drive from me.. I'd have to pay to move it, etc... and I just can't afford that right now.

I'm actually waiting to find (locally) a 5 cylinder Merc diesel for my Tacoma, though. They come up on CL once in awhile.

That was for the cars. If you just wanted a 190D with manual transmission attached, I'd consider an even swap for the OM 636 I can always use them.

Drive your van over, swap power packs and be on your way.

What's the specs on the 190D?

Maybe once I get my 'Coma running, I'll just load 'er up and take a road trip to test out the 2RZ engine that's in it now. I don't work right now, so the distance isn't a problem.

I'll need the specs for the 190D engine, and what part (county or town) of Michigan you're in. It's looking like a 10 Hour drive or so, at least.
