a Turbo Diesel in an SL?
y'all think it would be possible to put the 5 cyl Turbo Diesel (617.952) into a SL from the same era (around 82)
I Know that there were 280SL's and 280E's, surely they wouldn't use drastically different mounting locations for the same engine, and since there were also 300D's of the same chassis (w123) then maybe the engine mounts might line up somewhat :) The only problem I see (heh, only problem is an understatement) is that the 617 motor is pretty tall and it might not fit under the hood of the SL. a 300SLD would be really sweet, we'd get the best of both worlds, a stylish convertible with one of the best engines, the only down side is the Automatic, and the DOT bumpers (I can stand em on the sedans, but they ruin the look of the SL) but one thing at a time :) I really shoulda been a engineer for MB :D EDIT: yes this was brought up from the talk of the 240D engine in a Vette, but I did have the idea a while ago, just never thought about it in detail |
That would be awsome, and I think it wouldnt be too expensive to do.. I mean you can get a used 300D turbo motor and tranny for cheap and a SL without a motor can't be expensive.. I'm guessing $3000 for the both. The fun part will be making it all work :)

Check search I asked this question and if I remember someone replied that there had been a diesel SL made for the European market for awhile..I also think it would be a great conversion especially for highway cruising. I did a 454 Chevy conversion into a 2wd Blazer last summer and it made a great trailer puller....

I put a Toyota diesel into a 1942 Willy's jeep. It had a rag top with no doors--natural air conditioning. I don't recall smelling the diesel exhaust, but the exhaust came out the side with our home made muffler. I've seen the black smoke come out when the engine is floored, though. I'd say do it.:) Put that diesel in!

If you could only fine a 400CDI V8 egine for that SL. You'd have a smoke free rocket that would get over 40 mpg.

Hahaha....It would be fun, but it would be NOISY!!! No soundproofing when the top's down!

i already did the convert. scene with a vw rabbit. convert it to a vw diesel with a 5speed. NOW as for the smell it depended on what i was burning and that was never diesel. number ingriedient used french frie oil from the local pizza store number two used (filtered motor&tranny oil) number three scented candle oil. just imagine the smells when we stopped at a light. go for the sl thats what makes this country grow. ps i got up to 60 mpg. good luck |
