B-2 piston help & decisions
I have found lots of help with the transmission and the B-2 piston, but I need advice. In my daughter's 123 she was pouring lots of trans fluid in (2 quarts in 2 weeks), and it started slipping and then wouldn't engage in forward gears when hot. When it cooled off and we added more fluid it would go forward some; reverse was fine. I pulled the B-2 piston and it looks good, so I might just put a new piston seal ring and cover circlip if I can find it.
Do I need the sleeve that the end of the piston and rod go into also? (is it the brake band bushing on Fastlane?), and should I replace the piston anyway even though it's not broken ($125)? -'83 300D 123 -transmission fluid looks good -I'll replace the filter and fluid, of course. thanks

The fluid loss is an issue. Where is it leaking?

I have not found any fluid under the car; it seemed a bit damp in the area of the b-2 cover... One of the symptoms of B-2 problem I found was fluid leaking out of the bore. Maybe we were losing some on the road.

The fact there is fluid loss is troubling to me. If you can't determine where the loss is coming from, I'd be hesitant to pay $125+ on a new B2 piston. But at the same time, I would not put back in the old design piston and sleeve.
So I suggest you go to a wrecking yard find a maybe an 1987, definitely 1988 or newer (but not sure how much newer) vehicle with a 733.3xx trans like a 420SEL or 560SEL and pull the updated B-2 piston, sleeve and lock ring (since you lost it). Then install it in your trans with a new o-ring on the cover and test it. If you still using fluid, your not out 125+ dollars and can put that towards a new transmission if needed. I pulled an updated B2 piston and sleeve from a '88 560SEL to use in a 1984 300D and only paid 6 bucks for it. .

B2 piston SEAL source, '84 300d
Hello,
I'm ordering parts to replace the broken B2 piston on my '84 300d~127k. seems everyone has the new style piston and bushing, but I don't see the seal anywhere. The old one will be destroyed shortly. Is this a dealer part? or a common size? anyone have the part number? any help, thanks all, Bri

Part number is 006-997-73-47 called, reasonably enough, "seal ring". $9 from my local dealer. BUT if you use a seal picker, like part number #3245 from NAPA, you can reuse the old one - it's not a wear item. I destroyed mine before buying the picker. Learn from me - it's less than 2 minutes to extract the seal with the picker; while I spent over an hour before that with an assortment of hooks, modified screwdrivers and the like.
