Grdenko, the car is just as fast as it was before. Will run 118 mph by GPS, 121 mph indicated. The car feels more peppy after installing the Dawes device. Turbo boost builds faster using that type of system. The fuel on my car is not electronically controlled so it gives the same as before. Fuel delivery depends on boost pressure, no boost-no fuel. Computer cuts fuel by cutting boost.
You have to run a new hose between the intake manifold and the turbo and put the Dawes device in the middle as close to the turbo as practical and still be able to adjust it. I installed a boost guage in the car to keep track of boost pressure. But once it is set, it pretty much stays set.

michakaveli - here's another photo but it is old. I need to do a more recent photo but I really got a scolding from my wife when she saw this one. :D

It's because you were doing that and getting HIGH.

Grdenko 02-11-2004 02:50 PM

hope it works on my car

so extra diesel is supplied based on the pressure in the manifold and not what the computer tells it? if thats how it works, that would be good.

as for the hose going from the intake to the turbo, do i have to drill a hole or what? can i split it off from the hose that goes to the alda?

my car will do 123mph, and thats with the wastegate open. does the turbo really increase your top speed? or just acceleration?

thanks alot

My car had a hose coming off the intake manifold that went to the overboost protection switch. The ALDA tee-d off of that line. I tied in there and did away with the overboost protection. It will not work anyway with this type of setup as nothing controls boost but the Dawes Device.

My car builds boost faster than with the stock setup. That makes the car more peppy. Top speed would depend on how much boost you are now supplying at top end. You really need a guage. I used this one http://www.speedshop.org/store/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=20
It is small and works well. Just used some velcro to install between the steering wheel and guages. More boost = more fuel = more power. Fuel will only increase up to a point unless you adjust the ALDA, which I do not recommend on these engines. They are hot already. I ran my car on a short run without the Dawes device to see how much boost it would build. It went to 28 psi but there was no more engine power than 14.5 psi because fuel only increased up to a point.

called the guys at M&D distributors, they didnt know what was going on. i told them i wanted to replace my vacuum controlled wastegate with a mechanical one, and the guy tried to tell me that my car doesnt have a vacuum system because its a diesel!

im having my indie shop fix it the regular way, itll cost a bit more but itll be factory, which is better in a way.

would it be possible to switch my computer with a euro computer? that would be cool, but probably really expensive.

thanks for the tips.

oldsouth 03-10-2004 12:18 PM

You talked to someone who did not know anything. They probably rarely get any turbos in with a vacuum wastegate. A regular pressure operated wastegate for your model turbo would work fine.

Oldsouth,

I have a question about how hot your engine usually runs? Sometimes during the summer months with the AC on and stop and go traffic, the temperature climbs. It never overheats but I'm just worried because it gets much hotter than it ever does in the winter. I estimate around 95 to 100 C.

oldsouth 03-14-2004 05:26 PM

Yes, mine runs up in that area in the summer also. Make sure your viscious fan is kicking in right. I had to put some more silicone in mine and that made the car run a little cooler and the electric fans don't run as much.

old south,
replacing the transducers didnt work. i called M&D again and the wouldnt help me. i was wondering if someone else could do the work or where i could get the proper part for my shop to put in.

thanks

oldsouth 03-26-2004 11:41 PM

Send me all the numbers off of your turbo and check and make sure what brand it is.

Grdenko 03-27-2004 06:34 PM

the housing of my turbo says -

Garrett M11

my service manual says:

Garrett TB025 (usa) 1990 or T025

thanks

oldsouth 04-11-2004 08:23 PM

Sorry for the delay Grdenko, I have been on several wild goose chases looking for a used diesel for my son. Found one in Illinois. A 98 E300 that is very clean. That's another story though.
My turbo is a Garrett or Allied Signal TB 03 which is a little larger than yours - I think. The part number of the wastegate is an Allied Signal # 430099-0010. Surely M & D could tell you if that part number would fit your turbo and if not which one would. Don't let them search for one for your car model but the turbo model. You are looking for a standard pressure operated wastegate.
Hope this helps.
