Well it all depends what his reserve is.

I'm shopping for a motor, but I doubt his reserve is in this solar system.

I just feel bad for the guy since he took such a beating at that mechanic. Over 10 grand for a used motor and swap in a poor body candidate?

Wow....now that is a money pit! He's spent more trying to get that thing on the road than I have spent in 6 years of owning my W126. Including purchase price!

That guy did indeed get ripped off. I'd have installed a new motor for him for less than $1000. Backyard labor rates. $30 an hour

The guy said he paid $2300 for it even though he knew it wasn't running. Even though it is a one year only MB diesel, paying $2300 for a non runner in need of body work isn't the most intelligent thing to do.

Yep, even a mint condition non-runner is lucky to be worth much more than 1000-1500. We got a mint W126 for about $700....it even still sorta ran...using about as much oil as diesel though.

This a nice story and I would tend to believe it, after I see all ligit receipts, and speak to the shop that did the work.
My point is that it is less than norm that a seller is totally honest. They are out there and I salute them.

Not knowing the MB leather vs Tex, maybe a finer point of MB ownership, but he indicates that he thought any MB buyer would know, he admits to NO responisibility of error. Kinda sent a flag to me. This car sounds to have more than 100K with shocks & bushings in need of replacement. Interior & engine appears in great shape. Kinda a bad neighborhood, with rear window broken, speakers missing..

I hope it sells and he gets his money....

He has it listed on Chicago Craigslist for $7000, and basically states the same stuff as in the ebay ad.

Geez, for $7200, he could have had a brand new Metric engine put in.

Even if you give $100. per hour............a good mechanic can change that engine in not more than 15 hours. Find the engine for about $2500. shipped and you're looking at not more than $4000. for the entire job.

This fellow was ripped off by another "mechanic".........pure and simple. Happens every day and there is nothing that can be done unless there is a written estimate in advance. They never provide same...........because they are dishonest.

Reaffirms the basic tenet of these vehicles. If you can't fix them yourself, better avoid them at all costs unless you have a highly trustworthy mechanic.

$7200 for an engine with 40k on it?

Email the seller and tell him that the mechanic more than likely paid $2200 for the engine and ripped him off for $5000.
