300sd slow off the line with ac on!

Hi. my 81sd is slow off the line when the ac is turned on.
When in traffic, when light turns green. I turn the air off and it takes off like a rocket.

Is something suppose to turn the compressor off when under a load?

Thanks,

Tom

Nope. That didn't happen to that model until 1985. Some bogging down will happen with the A/C on. But the question is what type of refrigerant is in there? R134a would certainly bog down a motor a lot because of the higher pressure. Or an over charged R12 would also bogging. The other possibility is your compressor is seizing up.

The kickdown switch doesn't turn the compressor off?

I have had my 81 300SD since 1984 and it has always acted this way. Going up the hill in my driveway, sometimes I just click off the AC - amazing how much more power it has to go up the hill. I think yours is working properly.

The car only had ~120hp/170tq when new... it's 25 years old now. What do you expect?
