Timing chain won't come off timing device

Have my 300DT OM617 opened up to change out the injection pump timing device and vacuum pump. Stalemate is with the chain maintaining it's grip on the timing device sprocket. The chain tensioner is loose, chain attached to camshaft with cable tie, driveshaft at TDC with a little back and forth between the 10's to see if I can loosen it's grip while I pull the chain away with different implements. The lastest seemingly effective are plastic knives inserted to pull the chain away and keep it away. Can't seem to get the chain off past 3 o'clock. Any suggestions while keeping my timing?

thank you for reminding everyone that there is absolutely no way to remove the chain from the IP timing device without removing the pins that are pressed into the block.

you will find 2 or 3 pins pressed into the block that prevent the chain from disengaging with the timer. You will also find a bolt-like appendage on the fender side of the block that prevents the same thing.

You need an engine manual.

Manual

Jt20, is there a preferred engine manual for the OM617?

I am not jt20 but the Factory Service Manual 2 CD set is $19.99+$7 shipping and extensively covers the whole car with the exception of rebuilding the Transmission.
However, you have to be willing to read as the pictures are few and not always clear.

No manual so far matches the sheer amount of info compared to the cost.
The same information in official Mercedes used printed Manuals that covered what was in the 2 CD set sold about a month ago on Ebay for about $362. And, it is unusual to find all the printed manuals sold together.

manuals

chirorick,

For your MB the Factory had a separate (Paper) manual (Each) for:
Engine
Electric
Climate Control
Body

(The individual Owner was never offered the Factory Transmission Manual.)

The Paper Manuals Are ALWAYS far and away much better than the Abortion
that's sold on CDs by Mercedes!

If you can find ANY of the Paper Manuals, scoop them up!
