83 300 D Black smoke after IP install
83 300D - I installed a good used IP since the original IP had no output - at first when it was when hot & then eventually no output any time. Did the test of hooking up to a can of diesel , priming & still nothing.
Anyway now with the other IP in, it runs GREAT but it smokes badly on startup, it hunts during cold idle (which I believe is the rack bolt). It smokes badly during idle and when punching it & cruising. Basically I can't drive it because it about chokes you & anyone around & behind it. I've adjusted the pump timing & even advanced it a little to ~30 deg. When I first put this IP in I had to crank up the idle screw 3 or 4 turns to get it to idle also. So now I think it's dumping to much fuel all the time for some reason. The IP looks to be from an 85 since it has the block on the engine side above the mounting bolt like my friend's 85. I've been working on it weekly with no progress & need to get it cleared up so I can drive it again. Thanks for any help. |

If it is an IP from '85, isn't there some sort of electrical connection that needs to be made? My car is an '82 which has no electrical. IIRC, the '83 pump is all mechanical as well.

That is just a sensor. You drip timed it?

I would have a look to see if the alda sealed cap is still there. Perhaps the fuel was turned up by the last owner of the pump? Since the pump is off a 1985 perhaps it might be wise to verify the timing again with the a-b light. Or at least inspect the port with a mirror to make sure at what degree reading on the harmonic balancer it is centered on.

Not at idle, although I guess "badly" is subjective.

I timed it with my wife looking into IP hole #1 & watching for a well up of diesel. I've advanced it more since just as a test. More advance should get rid of smoke right.
I took the ALDA cover off today & leaned it a full turn. "Smokes badly" is at idle you can see black puffs of smoke & after about 10 minutes the concrete has black soot from the exhaust. It's bad. |

And there is your problem. Use the correct drip method or look in the RIV hole. I found the easley method to be off as far as 10* on my 85.
