Is 13mm too wide for the A/C belt???

Haven't been around here much lately - my time has been spent on other Mercedes purchases. Up to 4 now - and my wife is still talking to me!

Anyway, I have had repeated problems with the AC belt on my '78 300D. Today, it frayed around the edges and it came off. I put a new one on and it just looks too wide to me - it is a Conti belt, 13mm wide, and it seems to set up too high in the pulley groove. It is really hard to get it tight, I think I did but I'm not sure it's not going to start slipping again. When it starts to slip, the compressor starts screeching something awful, primarily while idling.

I thought I read somewhere that the AC belt was 12.5?? I can't find one anywhere...
