1980 240D Trans Fluid

New to the hobby with a 1980 240D, auto trans. I would like to change all the fluids & filters, adjust the valves, diesel-purge, etc. Perusing the posts seems to indicate this is a unique trans, compared to later years or the 300D. Can anyone shed some light on the unique aspects, problem-spots, etc? Also, I was looking for the trans fluid drain bolt on the pan and do not see one! I am also told this trans has no interchangeable filter? I will roll underneath and copy the trans number, but was hoping someone knows these transmissions. Any advice is appreciated.

Interchangeable? With what should your transmission filter interchange?

Welcome to the forum!

Dex III for the oil. No drain bolt? It is usually a hex "button head" type bolt. If not, then just drop the pan. Not a big deal. The 1980 240D AT has a filter. Parts are available here at the top of the page. Here is the link to your filter:

http://www.allpartsexpress.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=1980-MERCEDES--BENZ---40d--/--L4--404cc--.4l--Diesel--Fi-Transmission&yearid=1980%40%401980&makeid=MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40X&engineid=1192979%40%40240D++%2F+L4-2404cc+2.4L+DIESEL+FI%40%40240D&catid=Transmission%40%40Transmission&subcatid=A%2FT+Filter+%26+Pan+Gasket+Kit@@A%2FT+Filter+%26+Pan+Gasket+Kit&mode=PA

Nothing special or out of the ordinary about that car or trans.

Yes, meant replaceable filter. No drain bolt in the bottom of the pan, but a hex bolt at the bottom of the torque converter, which I will also rotate & drain. Thanks for the link to the filter. One more question; the trans appears to be flaring on the 2-3 shift, but only when warm. I checked the vacuum system for any obvious leaks, (don't have a vac gauge for a complete test) and things look OK. Puzzling that it shifts perfectly for the first 15 minutes or so, but then starts to flare. I would think a vacuum issue would not be heat-related. Any thoughts?
