UNIVERSAL TRIP METER

is there a device that I can remotely hook up somewhere that will record my mileage when I drive my car?

I don't know if I'm really ready to start taking apart the dash and mess with the odometer and I want to know what kinda mpg I am getting because it seems a little on the low side.

Is there a GPS device that can record my distance every time I drive and record it until I reset it?

I have a GPS unit but it only records the distance I'm traveling if I program a location.

I just want something to be able to measure my mileage so I can calculate where I'm at.

If anyone knows of anything please chime in...

thanks

Jason

I'm not sure what make or model GPS you got. Mine is a garmin and has an odometer function. I checked my odometer over a few different days over 1 mile, 10 miles and 50 miles.

Now that I know the error (which is exactly 20%), I just factor that in before I calculate my fuel mileage. I also use the calculation for doing oil changes and service too. IE: a 6,000 mile oil change is actually a 5,000 mile oil change as indicated by the odometer.

Your wheels look OEM for that model, why would you be off 20%?

These old odometers get out of whack after nearly 30 years of service.

When I bought my sd, it had chrome rims. I changed to the flat later 80's style cuz they make the car look more "put together" in my opinion. The speedometer and odometer were VERY off with the 16in chromes. My tire guy got slightly low profile tires so that my new 15s would give the same info as the old 14s. Now my GPS and my speedo and odo are as close to flawless as my calculations can tell. Spot on.

Are you sure that your odo/speedo isn't off due to the profile of the tire?

how much was your garmin and does it record the mileage only when you turn it on? if you put it on odo mode when you start you car every time it keeps track perfectly or does it do it when the car is off too somhow?

You could just fix your odometer. It's really not that hard.

I have an old Garmin 2610 (great screen!) it only keeps track of mileage when it is on, and can be re-set whenever you want, keeps track of top speed, hrs, elevation blah, blah, blah . . .

i dont know how the setup is on a w123, but I just did the fix on my w126 and it was super easy. i even checked accuracy via gps and it is spot on. i dont think you could buy a gps for cheaper than it is to fix the odo.

I used my old E-trex garmin for all of this. It is a portable unit I used to use for hiking and Mountain Biking. It only records when I turn it on. Before I start checking mileage I reset the ODO function before I roll off.

The problem with my ODO being so far off is a combination of oversize tires and the wrong size "brass" gear in the cluster. I think at some point my cluster was swapped for another. This is based on some research that I did with another forum member on the number of teeth on the brass gears in different clusters. I have put up several posts on this if anyone is interested in searching. But, they are for the 123.

I think that in your case. I would track the odometer over a period of a few days and compare that to the GPS. If you see a difference between days... Then you know your odometer is slipping and or you have a gear that is about to fail. In either case it is an easy fix and there are a few tutorials on the 126 around. I think there is even one over at ODOgears.com.

It could be fine too. The only way to tell is to check it for a few days. If it is way off, it will be obvious quickly.
