parts diagrams and vocabulary for the non-grease monkey '85 300d-t
Hi,
I just found this "thing" unplugged under my hood whilst looking to solve a problem and thought: "gosh I should ask the forum what the hell this 'thing' is..." Then a strange muteness overcame me as I pondered how to describe the 'thing' without sounding ignorant, but with enough ignorance maybe to inspire the "knowing" into revealing their "knowing" because too much "ignorant" inspires "silence" in the "knowing". Then I remembered the guy who sold me my federal '85 300d-t mentioned something about the existence of a cd which has diagrams of the parts that make up my car with their names and part numbers. Does such cd exist, and where does one find it? I have a haynes manual but it falls short of describing the information that I need (how would the makers of it know what procedures would be common place 24 years in the future... Anyway, this "thing" looks like an inline fuel filter, says "Karcoma" on it, with some benz symbols and no part number and is attached to a line (vacuum presumably) that comes out of the firewall of the car just under and to the left of the brake fluid (when one is on the front bumper facing the driver, basically coming out of the firewall where the door switch vacuum lines are...). It just dangles there, daunting me to ask, what purpose do I have? What is my meaning? Cheers! |

That is a one of 2 vent lines on the 85. One has a filter and one does not.
I remember removing that crap when I removed my ARV and EGR components and tubing. The line you speak of is in the vacuum diagrams sticky.

BTW, posting a picture is a great way to get around the problem of trying to describe a mystery part.
The purpose of the filter on the line is to keep dirt out of the vacuum system.

It is difficult to get a pic of that particular part. It is under the dash and above the steering column. Here is a link to one of the diagrams: http://home.comcast.net/~phantoms/vacuum/egr_california.jpg The part you are speaking of is #85 in that diagram. This diagram is for the California version. But, believe it or not, yours is similar.

Wow, that's fast
Thanks Snookwhaler for the diagram and part #. (BTW you have a beautiful car, same color and model as mine!). I did check the vacuum diagrams prior to posting believe it or not. I didn't think to look at the California model. Why? Who knows! Thought it would be quite different I suppose. Mine doesn't appear to be connected to anything, and there isn't a 'Y' to connect it to. I'll ponder that and be back if I have questions.
What does "ARV and EGR" stand for, and on the diagram it connects to something labeled "ATM". I guess this gets back to my original post...I bought this car a year ago and love to tinker with it. The mindset of a newbie though is always, "is this normal, or could it be even better?" The real reason I've been back at working to improve the car is that I drove someone else's diesel benz (which was a wagon) and it had so much more power and smoothness to the driving experience. And all the door locks worked...Ahhhh. You guys are great... |

Brian explained these things to me when I bought the car. I have forgotten a lot of it already. EGR is an acronym for "Exhaust Gas Recirculation". ARV is an acronym for "Air Recirculating Valve".
The bottom of the thing that says ATM #84 is the "vacuum converter" for the EGR. That part is on the drivers inner fender well along with component #81. Edit: OOps... Almost forgot. You should get a good vacuum gauge and a Mighty Vac. You can figure out and fix all of your vacuum problems quickly with these tools and a little insight. I had the same problem with the locks and it turned out to be a problem with a "door lock actuator". Simple fix. Best to plug the lines for the locks (under the hood) until you figure it out. Unless it bleeds off slow.
