'96 E300D SRS Light

I have the SRS light constantly on in my E300D now. Has anyone else experienced the same in their 96-97 E series ? Is it possible that this is simply the contacts in the steering wheel ?

Thanks,

Brian

Seat belt sensors are fairly common faults; regardless, requires SDS or other high end scanner to read that module.

SRS, scanner suggestion ?

I have been riding with the same light on for some time now, '99 E300D.
If this is the seatbelt sensor, I am assuming that it is only the seat which is in use ? I ride alone 99%, so should I concentrate on only the driver's seat ?
Any suggestions on a scanner ? I have put off that purchase, but if I need to get one, I do not wish to buy one that does half the job.

Thanks Guys,

I know in my 98 if I put something light (10 lbs. or so) it can't seem to decide if someone is sitting there or not and it turns the airbag on/off light on and off. Eventually the SRS light comes on but disappears when the weight is taken from the seat.

Thanks Guys,
The scanners that show up for $50 in the auto parts stores and web sites will not do the job. The "high end" scanner to which Terry refers in his post #3 is typically a dealer or service shop tool; price unknown but probably higher than you would want to pay.

You could shop around, find someone willing to diagnose the problem for the lowest price, then say "thanks" and fix the problem yourself.

As to scanners that forum members buy, my personal recommendation is the "ScanGauge" that is attached to the car semi-permanently. It can act as an extra set of engine gauges, reading battery voltage, fuel use rate and economy, plus scan and clear codes. About $150 [I have no connection with this company].

The picture shows the ScanGauge on my '96 E300D (W210, OM606NA). It is reading (when the picture was taken)

Miles per gallon (0.0 at rest).........Battery voltage
Throttle position sensor...............Gallons per hour fuel useage

Many other things it can do and you can add other sensors. A nice tool/toy.

Jeremy

About the light always on it could be the weight sensor on the passenger seat or too many faults stored into the computer, I think its after 20 fault, the SRS light comes up as you need to bring it to MB to erase and take care of the faults.
Olivier
I forgot, the weight sensor cable under the seat is prone to break as well, just worn out, and this can just be patched no bother

Jeremy - Is your reserve light lit with 1/2 tank or is it just a trick of the lighting?

Olivier, you may not be able to use the ScanGage because I believe European cars lack the OBD II port. I have a 38 pin to OBD adapter at home and I'll check and see if it will connect that way.

Sorry for the delay, I got lost in the scan thingy previously and forgot, I should have said that mine was the same, it was too many faults stored in the memory. I checked everywhere, every switches, ass mass in the passenger seat etc...Nothing could stop it. I finally went to the dealer, on the STAR, it just erased the faults and all was working.
I think when the memory reaches something like 20 faults the SRS light come off to tell you to go to the dealer.

I have a '96 210.020 E300. I believe that it lacks the seat switch. If so, the passenger air bag goes off even if the seat is unoccupied. Later models have the problematic switch. That switch may save you an airbag or two if you get in a minor wreck when alone in the car, so perhaps it's worth dealing with it if you have one.

My SRS lamp illuminated on me a few months ago. I drove my car to work and when leaving, I noticed that the lamp was lit. I don't know for sure if I drove off from work with it illuminated or if it triggered on the highway, but I noticed it on the highway and I wasn't stopping -- air bags or none. It worked as expected the next time I started the car.

There is also a weakness on the connection under the passenger seat for the ass-mass. Sometimes the wires broke and need to be re-attached/ trimmed, worse a wee look there.
