OM617 - Cannister Fuel Filter Gasket?

My fuel filter had a copper crush washer inside it. I noticed that a new fuel filter I also have came with a small black rubber o-ring. Is either washer acceptable on my OM617 or should I stick to the type that was previously installed?

There were two different style bolts, one uses a washer on top the other doesn't. They both have "O" rings on the shaft. You're going to need a new washer on top. I use a composite gasket from the hardware store, a #30 cap thread gasket.

Please clarify

I'm a novice here, so could you spell out the sequence of parts (bolt, copper washer, rubber o-ring) to install? I'm not understanding. Thanks very much.

When you remove the spin on filter, pull up on that bolt to remove. You'll see the washer of course and you'll see the "O" ring/s on the shaft.
It'll be self evident.

I've done that. I saw the copper washer, but I didn't see the o-ring, though the new filter I purchased had one taped to the box. This is a silly question, but does the small rubber o-ring go beneath copper washer?

No it does not.
Good for you on getting a filter with that washer, measure it and record for future use.
The "O" ring goes on the bolt, there is a channel machined into it. The same as the channels in the oil canister lid stem.
If your old rubber "O" ring is pliable you can reuse it.
