What to do to OM617a while it is out?

Now that I've sourced a turbo engine for my 300GD (Thanks John!) I'm looking at what to do with it while it hangs from the hoist.

My list so far:
adjust valves
change pan gaskets
change valve cover gasket
remove turbo and install pyrometer probe
Ream glow-plug holes and install the best of my glow plugs
de-grease it. Ooof.
Re-install vacuum pump with new gasket
check cam timing and adjust if necessary

What am I missing?

-Tad

Turbo oil drain tube seal
Oil filter gasket(whether its leaking or not)
Rear main seal-imagine having to take it apart to replace
Get rid of the EGR
trans main seal
MOTOR MOUNTS

Performance:
VNT setup is easier out of the engine bay....
Rack limiter removal from the IP is easier out of car
Set your timing to 26*BTDC
Upgrade to a 115A alternator- AL129X from fleabay usually
If you have a Garret (Air research) turbo you might want to clean the wastegate actuator assembly so its easier to adjust in-car

Also, after degreasing put some kind of protectant on there (LPS anti-rust comes to mind)
After I degreased mine it has developed a rusty oil pan, block, and other bits

Umm, besides trading it for a 603?

The lists above make a lot of sense. I would add timing chain, if you don't know how many miles are on this engine, oil pump (ditto)while you have the pan off, and valve stem seals. Replace accessories like the starter, primer pump, etc. Injectors can be removed and pop tested and balanced or replaced. It all depends on how far you want to go in a rebuild. Want to take the head off and replace the gasket, pre-chambers, de-carbon the pistons, maybe do the rings while you are at it?

I wish I had the energy to do something like this...

Also a good time to replace the water pump, its a breeze to replace that when the engine is out

Check your timing cheak stretch via valve lift method before spendign $100 on a new chain. If it is stretched beyond spec (Up to 10*(?) of stretch can be fixed with an offset woodruf key) then go ahead and replace it

I would take the timing cover off and inspect the whole mechanism to make sure the tensioner and guides are all in good condition. Of course, replace if necessary.

I would certainly replace the oil cooler hoses while it was naked. That's a bit of an unpleasant job to tackle while it's in the chassis and this place is littered with reports of failures. I have not replaced mine yet but I watch them like a hawk. If the engine was out for any other reason; I'd snatch them off in a heartbeat.

I bet they are off already (my second 617 for poor old Bruno had the lines clipped off at the junkyard just get new ones

Thanks all, here's an updated list:
adjust valves
change pan gaskets
change valve cover gasket
remove turbo and install pyrometer probe
Ream glow-plug holes and install the best of my glow plugs
de-grease it. Ooof. Paint steel parts after de-grease
Re-install vacuum pump with new gasket
check cam & chain stretch timing and adjust if necessary
Turbo oil drain tube seal
Oil filter adapter gasket(whether its leaking or not)
Rear main seal
Get rid of the EGR
trans main seal
MOTOR MOUNTS (Not gonna happen, $220 for G mounts)
water pump
thermostat
hose below t-stat housing
inspect chain tensioner
oil cooler hoses

Performance:
Rack limiter removal from the IP is easier out of car
Set your timing to 26*BTDC
If you have a Garret (Air research) turbo you might want to clean the wastegate actuator assembly so its easier to adjust in-car
