Turbo quit working

I seem to have lost the turbo on my 87 190D with the 602, 2.5 engine. I was searching other posts, but couldn't find basic info on checking these things out. There also seems to be a fair amount of oil around the thing.

Is there a link to a step by step process to assess the situation? I reached in and spun the blades and they spin, but not too freely, that is, they don't continue to spin once i let go. Also I read I should check the waste gate, but am not too sure how to do that.

Basically, I need a basic turbo tutorial.

Thanks!
George

I don't think they spin very freely without oil. In fact if I'm not mistaken your not supposed to spin it too much without lube oil flowing through it.
The easiest way to check would be to put a vacuum gauge on the line coming from the banjo bolt in the back that goes to the valve mounted on the fire wall. Can't remember the name of that valve right now.
Make sure that banjo bolt and line is clean.
Not sure how to check the wastegate, Google will probably tell you that.
It sounds like you may have a leaking oil seal. Do you burn a lot of oil?

If the turbo is bad you can probably find one at a junkyard.

Did this happen abruptly or has it gradually gotten worse over time?

First was this a gradual thing or did it happen all at once?

Get a pressure gauge and plumb it into the line going from the firewall to the ALDA on the injection pump. There are lots of posts on boost gauges here with instructions on how to connect them.

Clean out all the pressure lines from the intake manifold to the switchover valve to the ALDA.

Make sure that the vacuum lines going to the ALDA (if your 602 is anything like my 603 you have vacuum lines going to the ALDA to bleed off turbo pressure when the engine is cold.) are removed and plugged. Remember only do the vacuum lines not the pressure line make sure that turbo pressure gets to the ALDA.

Check to see if you are making any boost pressure with the engine running under load. You will not develop boost reving it in the driveway.

Let us know what happens...

Good luck!

go to your nearest auto parts store and buy a cheapie boost gauge, they come with the hardware that is necessary to hook it up to the OM602.961, we have a plugged bung on our IM that you can just unscrew with an allen wrench and install the fitting for the boost gauge (bigger of the 2 sizes it comes with)

sure sounds like a boost leak to me... does your car make an abnormal amount of smoke when you drive/rev it?

Either boost leak, or loss of boost signal. Does this car use and ALDA? If so how are the hard lines and the rubber connectors?

no smoke

No smoke to speak of, it pretty much operates the way it used too, with alot less power and no satisfying turbo sounds.

I'll get a boost gauge, is there a good map to the car's plumbing already on the site somewhere? I have the cd of the manual and will have a look at that tonite

Thanks
George

here: http://picasaweb.google.com/EMTtech/1987W201MercedesBenz190D25Turbo#5332385820936289394

is the best place to tap into the OM602.961 for the boost gauge, its already there and ready to go.

then you can be cool like me;http://picasaweb.google.com/EMTtech/1987W201MercedesBenz190D25Turbo#5332385844361725042

My '87 190D turbo had no boost when I bought it.

The switchover valve has to be open and properly plumbed (line from the intake plenum to the lower fitting, line from the ALDA to the middle fitting, upper fitting left alone (has a vented cap)). Clogged switchover valves are the most common problem, also be sure you can blow through the line into the intake plenum (not clogged).

Also, if your BOWDEN cable / kickdown cable is not working properly, it will upshift too soon and not allow boost (had that problem also).
