Why hasn't anyone made tons of cash...
...manufacturing new complete dashboards (not just caps) for the old trusty W123? I know dang near everyone who has a cracked dash would spring for one, right?

How much do you want to pay for one? It's the heat that cracks them - at these latitudes I have never seen a cracked dash. I suppose any part of the world that doesn't bake their cars in the sun for 20 years would have junkyards full of good used dashes.

if you shipped a container of blue ones to the states you could probably sell them for $300-$500 easy

Anyone seen a good black one at their local junkyard lately? Wanna do me a favor and ship it to Houston?

Have you checked out our local junkyards? You might be able to find something. Check the two LKQ locations in town, the one on Wallisville Rd near 610 and the one off of the North Freeway near West Road.

Let me fill you in on something about reproduction parts using my delorean as an example..
It has taken Delorean Motor Company Texas(the new people that own all of DMC) over 5 years to create new dash boards for the car after the idea was implemented. 5 years of R&D for material, matching the pattern for 100% concourse accuracy, mounting, tooling, and someone to make them. They sell for I think $350 since its a pretty simple piece as far as dashboards go. Its flat with some speaker holes in the upper corners. Yet it took them 5 years. The w123 dash is very complicated, it has a sub structure, the foam, vent holes, an integrated binnacle and the grain pattern changed after the 70's I think. So there are two possible three versions of the dash that would need to be made. who's up to it? also, shipping a dash via greyhound would be cheap |

^^Very true....
There are about 5 different styles of the W123 dash, the texture changed in Decamber of 1980.

Yeah I went to both this last week and the selection left much to be desired. I think there was one 300D at each. Both pretty ravaged. I did get a couple good engine parts off a 300SD though.

The Delorean place is off the Beltway, right? I agree though... it would take a company with some serious resources to get production started. I think it could be profitable though, given the number of people who love their 300's and hate their dashboards.

The answer is nobody's made tons of cash making replacement dashes because there isn't a ton of cash to be made doing it. As much as we'd all like replacement dashes, I highly doubt there's enough market to make the venture profitable.
Nonetheless, it's on my list of things to do when I hit the lottery.
