engine swap -1978 SD to 1985 wagon
hi,
This is my first post, so be gentle please. I have a 1978 300SD that has a blown transmission. A friend just purchased a 1985 300 TD wagon with a blown engine. So the simple question is, can I drop my 300 SD engine into the 300TD without major modifications? best, Eddie |

Welcome to the forum. The mean people are gone, lol -so don't worry. The older engine may have a different oil pan that gets in the way- but I think someone else will chime in about that. Wagons have a S elf L eveling S ystem (SLS) that uses hydraulic fluid from a pump in the wagons head. Sedans and coupes have a different head that does not have this pump. If you switch heads then the sedans engine should work. Note in 1985 models had a few one year revisions that you'll need to address, but none are complex or a deal breaker.

like mentioned before the head needs to be exchanged

Not sure a head off an 85 will fit a 78 engine. I know there were some changes made over the years. More informed people need to speak up on this topic.

engine swap
Thanks for the quick encouraging replies. I tried to restore the 78 300SD but had problems with parts etc. The 85 wagon is in good shape and would love to make the swap. Most everything works unlike the 78, but I needed a diesel to start running biodiesel, so I was happy with what I could get.
thanks, Eddie |

The two engine may have differences in the heads- but those differences will not play a part in a swap IIRC. The cylinder head gaskets, timing chain, valve stem seals are all the same for example.

Check the location of major components such as the alternator and ac compressor. These will give you a lot of grief if they are positioned differently on the block even though the basic engine is nearly identical (except for the vac pump on the wagon in the head).
