W211 tail light lens removal

Can anyone tell me how to remove the tail light lens on an '06 E320 CDI (W211) sedan? Thanks!

Are you sure that it comes off?

I'm not sure it comes off, I just assumed it was like a W210. I'm trying to gain access to the wire to the reverse lamp so I can hook up an after-market sensor which would serve as a low-budget Parktronic. Any suggestions/help will be appreciated. I looks like I'll have to remove lots of trim pieces, etc. in the trunk!

The 210 taillamp comes out as an assembly, but I do not know about the 211. I assumed that wanted to remove the lens only.

I didn't write my question very clearly. I want to know what pieces of the trunk I need to remove, and how to remove them, in order to get to the wire which turns on the reverse light. I intend to tap it to operate a low-budget after-market reverse sensor (non-OEM Parktronic).

um, does your curbview assist not work properly?! I think this sounds like bad news. go to walmart, purchase the backup camera... i think they're down to $80, and not tapping into W211 Wires...

I would not tap into the taillight wires. This is asking for trouble. Voltage drops/changes are known to affect cruise control. In addition, if this is a vehicle with electric brakes, and they fail (as they are likely to), they might not be covered under the 10 year warranty from Merceds.

If you are just looking for 12v, I'd try the CD/DVD first.

Agreed!!! If nothing else, you're probably going to piss off the burnt out light bulb detector, and you'll get an error message EVERY time you go to start the car.

I doubt this is the case anymore. I don't have the time to pull up my ETM at the moment, but I'm pretty sure the brake lights are driven by a computer module at the rear of the car. The cruise control probably gets the brake info from the SBC braking system.

What indication do you have that the brakes are likely to fail? Have the ones in your E500 been troublesome? Mine have been flawless (knock on wood) in the 30k I've driven the car. Regardless, ten years from now there will be plenty of used ones on eBay. Also, since I'm pretty sure there is a separate module in the rear of the car, I doubt it would affect the warranty of the actual SBC pump/actuator/etc under the hood, which I believe is the only thing covered under the warranty.

To answer the OP's question... I do not know an answer to your problem without considerable effort! Besides, I don't think the housings are separable, since the bulbs are not replaceable . They are supposed to be "lifetime" bulbs. Somehow I think that is going to work out just as well as lifetime transmission fluid.
