Salvage yard. Try getting one off the other side of the differential though as when placed on the opposite side you have some new unworn areas.

Chances of the car having been scrapped for bad axels is very small to non existant. Both cheap and not a bad option. Needless to say check for good boots on it.

I got mine from Kragen for $150 each a couple of years ago. So far, so good.

Hey, it is a pretty easy job and can be done with a minimum of tools, but does require a good floor jack and jack stands. Last year I bought rebuilts with a lifetime warranty from Advantage Auto Parts for about $90.00 exchange.

Choices:
Buy New Axles made in China or some other place and pay $100-$150, but no core charge and no shipping to pay to ship the cores back.

There are several large threads on Axles and few Members have had trouble fitting the spacers onto the new China Axels (be sure to save the spacers what ever you do). One or 2 have had trouble with the splines on the axles fitting.

Rebuilts from Kragen (got mine for $78 each, rebuilt by Cardone but I believe the price has gone up) or another auto parts place. The advantage here is you get a warranty and someone local to deal with if you have a problem.

Send your Axles to be rebuilt by a High End rebuilder. Cost close to $300 each and you pay shipping both ways; have a waiting period in which your car will be down.
Used Axles from the Junk Yard. Main advantage is Cost. It is more labor intensive as your will be doing 1 1/2 axle jobs; more if your used Axle turns out to be bad.

When buying a used Axle from the J Yard it could pay you to buy that insurance on the part so you could return it is bad from the start. Won't help if it goes bad several months later.
If your Axles are not making noise and only the Rubber Boots are damaged you could just replace the lube and Boots (again extensive threads on this).

Best to spend time reading the Threads.

Spend the money and do it right. I have gone the junkyard route and the chinese route.

DO NOT PUT A CHINESE ONE INTO A CAR WITH SLS.

$500 is absolutely ridiculous for this job. $230 is a bit high but ok. Anyone with a wrench can do this job.

Dude, you need to search the forum for axle repair threads. You did not state what is wrong with your axles. If they are shot due to torn boots and dried up, then I suggest you get some from junkyard and replace the boots yourself if necessary.

Many of us have done the job and it ain't that hard. At least you know what you are getting if you do it yourself. If you really are an F18 vet, then you know its important to do the job right
