Another belt question, 240D ...
... now, I want you guys to know I've had about six belt questions today, but up until now have made myself find an answer all on my own (and did). The good news is, I got all three new belts in and it runs great, very quite (didn't realize the screeching of the old ones that much until it was gone!). However, I noticed on the PS pump belt, it started to "fray" on the edges, i.e., little white fuzzies flying off on the outside edge. It looks like it's on there fine, looks like it fits, and I'm almost positive this is the correct belt (came from the dealership, and my dealership is usually good at getting the right parts). Is this maybe just a normal break-in occurrence? Or do I have the wrong belt? I can take a pic if necessary. At least it's the PS pump belt so if it's wrong it won't be that bad to change again.
Note: I just checked and it is the correct part #: EPC says 004 997 84 92 replaced by 004 997 99 92 ... the belt I just put in is the latter #.

That's not normal, not sure what the problem is tho. Bad belt? Pulley canted?

Well, I loosened it up again and tried readjusting it. One thing to know is that when I went to change the belt, I found two of the bolts on the PS pump missing (the two on the left side, including the top pivot one). I replaced them with bolts that look identical to the third one, but the top pivot bolt, when tightened all the way, I think pulled the pump upward a bit too much, maybe tilting the pulley. Is there a washer that goes on the outside of that by any chance? I just didn't torque it down really tight ... it's tight enough to be secure, but loose enough to leave the PS pump at desired angle. I also think I had the belt tightened a bit too much the first time. Anyhow I started up the engine and let it run a while, and it doesn't seem to be continuing to throw off shavings. I also noticed only two small spots of the belt are fraying ... the rest looks fine. So maybe it was just a defect in the belt? It's just the little white threads along the edge of the belt, not the belt material itself.
This car ... I tell you ... always an adventure.

You checked for nicks on the pulley?
My alt belt was wearing on the top inner edge and it turned out to be the alt bracket was slightly bent and rubbed on the belt when it was on the lower side of its travel and was not visible from the top. Always something with these cars indeed

Yeah, as others have mentioned, off center, angled, tilted.
Hopefully after replacing the missing bolts things will be okay. I had a PS unit fall away while driving, once home I was able to bolt it back on, going strong still.

Well, after adjusting the tilt just that tiny bit, everything seems OK. It wore off the frayed areas and since has looked completely normal. I drove it around for awhile and nothing flew/fell off. So I think it was either the tilt of the pulley, or just a little defect on the belt that wore off and is no longer an issue.
I think I spent about an hour of this job just trying to figure out where the bolts were to relieve the tension on the AC compressor. I have a York so it was just the pulley, duh.

Funny, the power steering pump on Smash only had a single bolt holding it in too. Was working fine though. I did add the other two later.

Yeah it was on there nice and strong with just the one bolt! It just wouldn't swing down the right way without the bolt to pivot ... so I used a couple shorter bolts just to give it the correct pivot. However, when I went to tension it, it just would not pull back up correctly until I replaced the bolts completely. I wonder why someone would take them out and not replace them, since it seems to me that the bolts would have to be taken out after the belt has been tensioned and the pump is in place.
