2.5t RUN AWAY ...AAAACCCCKKKKK!!!!

that was the scariest thing ive ever experienced
as it was running away i cut all the fuel lines and blocked the intake
it finnally shut off after a minute running at full rpm and covering half of pasadena in a smoke screen

anyone have this happen to them

im thinking the turbo seal went , it was a bit tired , lesson learned

When you say turbo seal went, does that mean it was running off oil?

Wow yeah sounds like he was running on oil to me Theres no way it could run that long with cut fuel lines. It must have been blocking the intake that killed it.

Hopefully the engine is salvageable man.. The only enjoyable part of that is the mad adrenaline rush, on the positive side.

one of those days you just wish you had a manual to dump the clutch.

That wouldn't work. Certainly not on my car. If the engine was revving and I dump the clutch I just burn rubber.

Runaway 93 300d

Little over a year ago I bought a 93 300d with a bad trans modulator, you could see the trans fluid suck through the vacuum line. Anyway, I decide to drive it home about 30 miles even though I knew it was overfilling the crankcase. About 3/4 of the way home and the car is running sweet and the wife following I decide to see what this 2.5lt. could do. About 3 seconds after I nailed it, it ran away on me. The smoke was so thick the wife and oncoming traffic had to stop. All I could do was pull over with my foot on the brake and turn it off with the key. By some miracle it shut off, but I dont know why. Got towed home, drained the oil, changed it, and started it right up. At that point I towed it to a Indy to fix the modulator and other things and have driven about 9500 miles with no problem from the overrevving. I would have to say luck was with me that day because I never heard a diesel rev that high. I know it was fueling from the overfilled crankcase but I dont know how.

I saw another thread about this while searching online.

I told my brother to get me a CO2 extinguisher. I haven't done anything critical to the engine so I don't think anything will happen.

It's still a worry of mine.

Not if you put on the parking brakes and service brakes nice and hard too!

And put it in a higher gear....

I have a 2.5 turbo, it would chirp, yes. but you could EASILY overdrive the motor with either bigger tires (like me) or your brakes. brakes would easily take that power.
