1989 W201 2.5D urgent advice please - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

Hello masters of the Diesel GOD

I am looking to buy Diesel Mercedes.
At the moment there are 2 W201.
First one is 1985 / 4 cylinders with 156K one family owned.
Second one is 1989 / 2.5 (5Cyl??) NON turbo with 153 K well looked after.

Difference in price is about $900. What are the cons and pros for both of them?

Urgent help needed please because I need to make my mind over the weekend.

The 1985 will get a little better MPG. ABOUT 38-40 mpg is what my 1985 190d 2.2 got. The 1989 looks better to me and has an airbag. The engine is also good and more power. The 1989 will be a 5 cyl 2.5 while the 1985 is a four cyl. I had both and the power on the 1989 is much better but the mpg will be a little less. about 34-35 is all I could get out of mine. I also think the 1989 is a little more rare because it has the body updates. They are both really goods engines.

Honestly I would look for a 1991 1993 300d 2.5 turbo. Those are much better than either 190. Or you could go with the e300 1995. These cars are very reliable and much more refined. Sorry about my first post I just sort of repeated what you had already said. One more thing the 1989 will have the third brake light while the 85 will not.

Well I would love to, but there are not many around west coast.
There is one very nice 1995/300D with only 144K in Dripping Springs, TX, the only problem is that I am in SLC/Utah

. I don't mind traveling to get it, but it is kind of hard to commit to the buy if I can't check the car.
