Your TACH may have a loose connection...I was wondering why your mechanic would be dead one minute then flopping around the next...

With respect to the original problem, search the diesel forum for the words " cigarette filter". Not kidding, cigarette filter is sometimes used as a temporary repair for this.

Good Lord, I pictured the mechanic squashed under the car, having gone undetected for awhile........
Now, for TACH amp issues, Techguy512 I believe still sells a very nice replacement amp. It is almost always the amp......

LOL I thought you had run over the mechanic too when I saw the title! Anyways your tachometer has the same symptoms mine had a short while ago. There is a little garbage-can looking thing behind the driver side headlight, unscrew that and cut the cord so you can take it off and hold it in your hand. Use a small screwdriver to pry out the inside part. There is a ton of ugly looking silicone stuck on the inside, don't worry about that just yet. Resolder all of the little pins to the wires, as the solder gets brittle and develops cracks over the years. Return it back in your car - if you don't put the little black inside holder back in it, make sure you put something over the silicone as it will grip the outer housing (screw-on part) and rip the pins or wires out again (ask me how I know). My tach works fine now, no more jumping or pegging out.

my car came with one of those as it was bought from a forum member (post). unfortunately, after 9 months of driving it, my tach is now going out of whack too. it's good to about 2600 and then it flips around and pegs and comes back, goes a little crazy, as well as pegging when i honk the horn.

besides the cigarette filter, what are the steps to diagnosing this one and permanently repairing it?

See my post for one solution. Re-soldering seems to work for a lot of people, the cigarette filter just puts pressure on the joints, so they will end up cracking again. Re-soldering them will solve that problem if you don't have a problem encapsulated in the silicone

Squabble, would you mind sending it back to me? I'll send you a new one....

This is the first report of a successful installation "going bad". I'd like to understand it.

This is a useful thread. It would be good for a mod to change the spelling in the title so that people could find it with a search.
