remove & replace viscofan?
I have an 82 300D-t (200,000 miles) that I'm told needs a new viscofan. I bought a new one and started to put it on but can't find an actual procedure that makes sense. (I'm not mechanically inclined, but I try.) My books say you have to pull the radiator (if they have any instructions at all) but I really don't want to do that.
I took the four bolts from the back of the fan and all I got was a loose fan with the clutch part still attached. I put them back and started on the four that go into the belt pully, but didn't loosen them all, then tightened them again. My concern is taking something off that I won't be able to put back on. My question is will the fan and fan-clutch come off if I just remove the four bolts going into the belt pully? And then, is there a bolt of fastener that goes through the center of the fan clutch into the water pump shaft? If so, how do I get it out. The may be a very simple procedure, but for some reason it has me stumped. Thanks for any assistance.

First remove the 4 bolts that attach the fan assembly (Visco and metal fan) to the water pump (pulley). You may have to remove the fan and shroud together.
After you get the assembly out of the car, remove the bolts holding the fan blade to the fan clutch (Visco).

There is another 4 bolts that are behind the clutch. Youll need to grind down a 10mm box wrench to get there. Removing the radiator is not hard but is nor required.

So if I take off the four bolts connecting the fan asembly to the pully, the entire fan and clutch assembly will come off? (Is there anything else connecting the fan/clutch assembly to the car besides those four bolts, like a bolt through the center of the clutch going into the water pump shaft?)
Thanks for the replies. Greatly appreciated!!

The four bolts that secure the clutch flange to the pulley are all that holds the fan to the engine. But you will need to disconnect the fan shroud (two clips at the top) and remove the upper radiator hose at the radiator. Then lift the fan and the shroud out together.

OK. From what y'all (I used to live in Pine Lake, GA) said, it sould pretty straight forward. I have an extra set of metric wrenches, a grinding wheel, and a screwdriver. Wish me luck, and Thanks!

The most challenging part of the job is reinstalling the flange bolts. It's a little easier if you don't completely remove one bolt. (ie: leave one bolt loosely installed.)
What brand is your new clutch? Some aftermarket versions have a smaller diameter shaft and don't require any wrench grinding. Last edited by tangofox007; 07-13-2009 at 04:57 PM. |

Clutch is a "TORQFLO" from Autozone. Cost was $121.00 plus $15.00 core chage. I asked twice and they said it is the right one.

Thanks, I did! (I think) And after I got the fan off, I discovered that the clutch is not the correct one. (Many bad words later) So I now have to make another trip to Autozone. However, their compter did not show any aternates. I may have to order it from Peach parts or somewhere else on the internet...and wait for delivery.
Oh well, If I didn't have any problems, life would be very boring! As I said before, many thanks.
