'97 E 300D (W210) ignition tumbler R & R

The key is starting to be hard to turn on from time to time, so i bought a new tumbler from the dealer, thinking that the procedure to r & r was the same (using the "U" shaped wire) as the 124 and 126. It's not! I've gone thru the threads and can't find any info on a procedure for the W 210 chassis. Is there some kind of special tool needed? Any DIY help on this procedure will be appreciated.

There is one hole - get your ignition in the correct position, then using a 1.25mm hex key insert into the single hole. You might have to slightly wiggle your key until the hex goes in with sort of a crunch sound. Now you are in the sweet spot. Remove collar.

There is indeed a special tool, Mercedes 210 589 00 07 for removing the bezel of the lock tumbler. I bought one for my '96, which should be the same as your '97. The tool itself actually carries the part number 639 589 01 07 (I cannot explain the difference). The tool cost about $50 from the dealer and I got a 15% discount for being an MBCA member.

See this thread for a detailed discussion of the removal procedure. Note my warnings regarding the type of ignition switch as it will also apply to you.

Jeremy
