Need help on A/C repair options

I've got a 1987 300D turbo and the original air conditioning system does not work. I've taken it to 2 shops to have it looked at. Both of the say they can't even diagnose the problem because of the original R12 system. Is this true?

They also tell me it would cost $1500-$2000 to convert it to a new system.

What are my options?
