seat switch/courtesy light trouble 84 300SD

hi
have an 84 300 SD with 6 way electric seats.
passenger seat works every way except sliding forward. currently its all the way back and unable to move forward. All the other tilt movements are fine. interested to hear any ideas or solutions; dirty contacts maybe ? have priced new switches and they're out of the question if thats the solution.

Also have an intermittant overhead courtesy light. might this be in the door switch or in the actual component ?
many thanks

The seat switches are practically indestructable. You probably just need to clean the contacts. If it is like my 81 300SD, you remove the door panel, remove the switch, clean all the contacts, and put it back together. There is a nice post someplace here with very good pictures.

Not to hijack this tread but I have a friend with a 1984 300SD and his drivers seat will not operated correctly. When you start the car the seat back goes in a backwards position. We replaced the switch put the problem did not go away.
Can you suggest any solutions???

When you try to move the seat forward, do you hear the seat motor trying to run but no movement? If so, the problem may be a drive cable which can be removed and lubricated to see if that gives you resolution. Also, here is an old post about cleaning the switches:http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/seatcontrols.htm (title is for Range Rover but the same switch)

Does the over head light flicker or does it not come on at times? I would suspect the switch on the light itself first. Also, a fuse problem might be the case. A suggested fix for intermittent fuses is to remove the cheap aluminum fuses, which are notorious, and replace with copper.

light comes on at times but has a mind of its own, but doesnt flicker. Sometimes i can switch it on at the light itself and rarely it works when the door opens.
