Lol....same here. If I put a value on my time I spend on the cars....and was paid for it.....I'd be ultra wealthy! As it is I don't consider my time all that valuable....I have plenty of time.

Just my opinion, guys. I would much rather spend a weekend swapping an engine or trans into a body I didn't need to fix than dealing with the rust. Plus, rusty cars are still great parts cars

My 78 240D is a rust apocalypse with lousy compression and all sorts of problems. A lot of people would say it's a waste of money, and technically, it is. But it's my hobby. What else would I do if I didn't have it to tinker with and curse at? When I look at the list of stuff I've done to it, and what I've learned, I really don't think I've wasted anything. Plus, everything I learn on this car is something I can apply to my 87 300D, which has been a part of my family since I was five and would like to keep on the road as long as possible.

Bottom line: It's a hobby, not an investment. Enjoy the adventure and the learning process, and don't worry if a few people think you're crazy.

I couldn't have said it any better. This is my exact point of view I drive another car as a DD. Unfortunately, it looks like the OP uses his W123 as his sole ride.

My story is a little brighter one:

I got my 300D from my stepfather for free. He hid it away from my mother in a storage unit for 10 years. I was saddled with every other cost to get it running however

. So I replaced every filter, fluid, and seal. There were a bunch of other misc repairs I did, but most of the work was done by my indy mechanic. Great czech fellow who worked on some of these cars in the old country I didn't have the time to dedicate to get this working. All in all I spent 1,100$ getting this bugger running. 462$ of it were the hydroedge tires.

So far I've been pleased

X2 Definitely, and Kingdoc1 is right if you really hate body work, but I've got holes you can fit your thigh through and I'm fixin those, you just have to enjoy it

The funny thing is, I think if I were an expert on bodywork I might think of this 240D as a waste of time ... but the opportunity to experiment with something I don't know anything about is kind of appealing. So far my efforts to patch up the rust on my 240 have been a little lumpy, but there's plenty more spots on the car to aim for improvement. It kind of reminds me of kindergarten art projects, only the big fun mess is much more toxic.

Wow! thigh-size holes! I'm going to offer my parts cars for sale on the forum next time instead of sending them to the scrap yard after they are picked clean--mine usually only have hand-size holes!

Seriously, though, I applaud your dedication if you elect to attempt repair of cars rusted that badly. You will surely gain some valuable skills.
