1991 350sdl

Many of you, no doubt, also cruise Benzworld, and are seeing me (as a new member, but not new to M.B.'s) as well as here. I have a '85 300D, a '82 300TD and now a '91 350sdl "bender". Just got the '91 and it has a rebuilt short block 2k ago. I am just learning about so many things and I ask for some advice, as well as patience. The car is making a "tiptiptiptip" noise after starting and after it warms up, the "tiptiptiptip" goes away for 15 seconds or so, then returns. I swear that the noise changes sides to even though I know that this is an in-line 6. No smoke @ all and have not had it but for 400 miles and NO oil usage so far. What the hell are some of the possibilites that might be considered by a local garage that they might look towards??? And if anyone says engine rebuild, the next post might be from my next of kin selling off my cars due to my sudden stroke...

The hydraulic lifters are known for making this sound.

Drive it with Mobil-1 for 10K and see if it cures itself, or pull the cam and pull the lifters and find the bad one.

Brian,
So changing the oil to Mobil-1 may be all? Can this be worse to drive for 10k after a rebuild(allegedly) or is it most likely that a lifter is really bad??

Sometimes it works...........sometimes it won't. No, it won't harm the engine in any way.

You'll need to use the Mobil-1 Turbo Diesel Truck oil...........it's somewhat difficult to find.

Thank you for this...BOY THIS STEAMS ME....I...am...an...idiot. I will ask my "new" mechanic to find this oil for me and see if that helps! Obviously, you nor I have any idea of what he may charge to pull the lifters as this is beyond my 123 basic knowledge.. Any clue as to a ball park cost?? Also, I have made this VERY serious offer @ B.W. too...If any sane individual who is planning/thinking of a trip to Orlando/Mount Dora (google it; 40 mins N. of Disney), I have a fully renovated cottage, 1/1 with a full kitchen and living room, on my property (close to Lake Dora) which anyone is welcome to be a guest (no charge) in exchange for some tutorial on my 123's and 350sdl. I have a triple sided carport w/ a roof attached to the center of the house for working!!

Lifter tick is fairly common, both my cars have it. Can't speak on MBs but at least on the Stealth/3000GT it is known as one of those things bound to happen, and fairly harmless. It is annoying though.

but on a rebuilt short block w/ 2k since?????????? I realize the difference in engines between 126's and 123's, but my 123's do NOT 'tiptiptiptip' @ all!! '82 TD w/ 211k and '85 w/ 185k. And your 300sd shares that engine! I just am looking to get the engine right even if it needs to be torn apart!..........ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Well check on the oil situation first. On my stealth changing to a slightly heavier oil muffled the sound a bit.

Unhappy

You're "the broke student" and I'm the "broke, 'IT MUST BE RIGHT idiot' " LOL. I have been prompted to try mobil-1, as you have undoubtedly read, and I am gonna try that. However, I am always in the red because my cars must be as PERFECT as they can be...I'm the guy you wanna buy from because I will go berzerk if even a window switch lamp is burned out! Having said THAT, I want it to function as it should, not to just "muffle" the sound. I need to find the source and correct it...VERY sad face and

A rebuilt short block might have used the original lifters or an existing set of lifters............probably didn't buy a brand new set.

The 617 has mechanical tappets and they cannot make the sound you describe. It's relevant to the 603 and later engines, only.

I had a few ticking until I switched to M1 which quieted all but one. That one seems to have gotten worse in the last few months, so I'm probably going to change it (or maybe all of them) before the end of this summer.

Hey Brian...I was just mentioning to tbomachines that his '82 300sd and my 300D & 300td were the same engine..I do realize that the 603 is what I am working with..I am beginning to get the picture that the PO did NOT replace the lifters! Why would anyone have an engine apart and neglect this??? Am I missing something?? Also, on the side of the engine is 6030703201. I get the 603 part, what's the rest signify?
