Engine/transmission transplant cost
Daydreaming on my lunch break....
If you had a rolling chassis Toyota Hilux/Jeep/Whatever and a working 300D what would it take to put the 617+trans into the Hilux? How long using hand tools and an engine hoist? How much in parts? As for fabrication, I see motor/trans mounts, custom driveshaft, radiator/oil cooler brackets, fuel tank modification, intake/exhaust adaptation, instrumentation, and a manual shutoff cable.

I spent a month, weekends and 2-4 hours per night, swapping in a v8 to my TJ Jeep. the things you foget are interfaces between the two systems, shift cables, radiator hoses and outlets, guage systems etc. and it always cost 2X what you estimate too

yep, i would agree with that...you will have to decide if it's worth the time and effort to do the swap. how will you use the vehicle after? i think a lot of those swaps are to convert to diesel so you can run home made fuel. there is a time to recover the costs.
I want to do that with my Jeep. 15mpg sux.

Sounds like a fun project. I think, assuming you can weld and fabricate mounts and brackets as needed it could be done for under $500. That is also assuming that you use as much as possible out of the mercedes.
One of the first things I would consider is the rear differential ratio of the vehicle you are going to put the engine in, and if it needs to be changed to run your diesel at the right rpm. You can buy an adapter from JTR that bolts to the flange on the back of the mercedes trans and accepts a Dana 1310 u-joint. In my experience, when dealing with driveshafts, it is much cheaper to find a driveshaft that is too long and have it shortened than to have a custom driveshaft fabricated. Keep us updated if you decide to do a swap. |
