You've got a 21 gallon tank I believe.

I go 400 miles before I fill up, and it usually takes about 16 gallons. So you could go 450 comfortably.

The sender could be a $0 fix. A lot of times it just needs to be cleaned. You just need a 46mm socket to remove the sender from underneath the first aid kit. Once out, you can take the sender apart, most likely finding years of sludge. Clean with brake cleaner, and reassemble. Do a for 'fuel sender' and there are probably pics of the procedure.

Good luck,
dd

I get 375 on my guage, but since the 2.47 gear gives me a 40% incorrect reading I really get around 525 miles on 16.5-17 gallons when I fill up. this is with a 300CD turbo with manual 4spd and 2.47 gear on all flat highway

330-340 before filling up. Usually takes 15 gallons. Ran it bone dry once at 350 miles.

350 miles for me with my heavy foot and 15-16 gallons. Does better on highways when I'm not speeding.

similar TD numbers

I fill up before 350 and it's 15-16 gallons on mixed driving. I've taken it to 350 before but I was nervous.

I started on a trip Saturday morning with a full tank. Sitting in the garage as I 'speak' the tripometer reads 376 miles and there's a smidge less than a quarter tank - according to my gauge. That's, let's see, um, uhhh 48.37 MPG

(I'll get back to you on that...)

Your calculations are a bit off. You've got a 21 gallon tank, and Ive got 5 full gallons in the tank with a little less than a quarter tank left.

So you have about 16 gallons consumed over 376 miles....about 23 mpg. Just about right. Little low on an 85, but in the ballpark. Your gauge is OK.

I usually run to around 400 miles - at which point the gauge is pointing at the R mark. Usually takes 15-17 gallons (depending on how much I've been exercising the ol' right foot)...
