how much dammage

My daughter was in the 82SD and was rear-ended today. The F-150 hit on the left rear and at first I thought it was just a tail light.
Tonight I noticed that there is a buckle behind the rear drivers door. It is between the windows, and runs down to the tire.

How do I tell what damage has been done. Is it worth fixing? do I even bother to file a claim? it was a $1000 car. Lots of parts, but not a great car yet...

From what you described it wasn't her fault. Was a police report filed? Might as well get a check for it, even though they'll probably total it, but you can buy it back.

This is the one labeled mobile parts car in your signature correct?

yes it was a parts car, that I had gotten back on the road after the roof of the shop fell on the other car... So much work on it...

No police report. She had stopped due to the ambulance had it's red lights on, and was trying to enter the highway. I was in the pass. seat. 2 sisters in the back, and she has her permit.

Did you swap info? I can't imagine it worth saving, especially if its only a minor wrinkle on a parts car. I'm sure its not that structurally compromised. Your daughter will likely hit other things in the future too.

Yeah, do a "bang and buff" fix and let her keep driving it. It will surely be injured again....you should see my sister's van!

I remember your Thread. Sorry that this has been a tough year for your SD's.

I would get an insurance claim on it. They might fix it. Or if they total it you might get more then you paid for it. But don't let them know how much you paid. If they do total it, you can always buy it back.

Its probably a major structural hit. I have seen other cars that way...a hit on the bumper compresses the bumper shock and the force follows the strut that it mounts in up to where it transfers to the main cage and you get a minor looking wrinkle somewhere around the fender but its a major damage.

The car iis no doubt beyond repair, but if its not deformed much may drive just fine for a rolling parts car...does the trunk and door fit ok?

Its structural integrity though is compromised and in any future accidents the full protection designed in will not be there for you.

If it has to go through your insurance, i would not make a claim on it. I am assuming a 15-17 year old driver here and insurance premiums will be enough already without starting her claims history early.

My ins. co. said that it would have to go through his insurance. he hit us in the back, so he is at fault.
Guess I should see what he wants to do. As long as he has no issue I am inclined to let it go, you fix yours, I fix mine.

ok,
His ins. Co came by and looked at the car. They said that the frame/unibody is not bent.
What are the chances of this, with the wrinkle up the car above the wheel?
He left a check with my wife for 1200. and said if the shop needs more then they will take care of it then.
Sound reasonable? Should I get an estimate privately? I would drive it, If I knew for sure it was not bent.
I guess he said that I have 5 days to decide what to do. I will know more when I see the paperwork tonight.

I'd put the $1200 in my pocket and drive it.
