Windshield wiper issue...

What would make the windshield wipes come on with out any KNOWN input from the combo switch?

The switch is still tight feeling, high beams, flash to pass, turn signals, washer and wiper function work.

The W/S wipers will come on in either intermittant mode, of full on. Moving the switch to the on position and the back off will shut them off, but the a few minutes later, it happens again.

This just started after we had a brief rain shower yesterday. I turned off the wipers, then shut off the engine. The car sat all day at work, and then the wipers came on during the ride home last night. They did that again today at lunch. All was fine this morning when the weather was cool.

Thanks!

Inside the control unit for the intermittent wipers is a small electrical relay. The actuator arm is kept in the off position by a small spring. If the spring breaks or comes off and the actuator arm is allowed to float it can close the circuit at random intervals. This will make it appear that the wipers were in intermittent mode. If it closes the circuit and it remains closed it will appear as if the wipers are in "low" mode. When you turn on the wipers the relay coil energizes and the contacts are closed with enough force that when the wipers are later turned off the relay arm bounces off the contact and opens the circuit again.

I'm not saying that what happened in your case, but it is a possibility.

How would I check that unit, and where is it located? Can the relay be replaced?

Thanks!
