Alternator

My 85td's alternator went bad so i got a Bosch Rebuilt unit and installed it, the problem is i am still getting the alternator light coming on even with the new alternator, i also made a mistake and lost the voltage unit on it so i replaced with an older voltage unit that iu had sitting around, it didnt have a green bead looking thing thats on that piece, im wandering if running the new alternator without the voltage unit will harm the new alternator.
thanks forum

Install a new voltage regulator as soon as you can. I would think you won't run very long as is.

Stock gauges (boost, temp, oil, amps etc.) on most vehicles are nearly useless. Measure voltage across the battery terminal to help figure out what's going on. Test with engine and Key off to ascertain battery charge. Charge should be approx 12.6. Measure voltage with engine running. It should be near 14 volts. Anything more or less, take the car to one of the chain stores & put their machine on it.

Also, have the store bench test starters and alternators before leaving the store. I've had 3 alternators for different cars test bad out of the box which indicates a large failure rate as I usually only work on my vehicles thus the sample size is small.

Without spending much unnecessary cash to fix the problems that will result.

I just changed the voltage regulator on a 560 SEL. The replacement did not have the green resistor. The part number on the old unit is 1 197 311 023. The replacement had a part number 1 197 311 028. The new regulator works fine. It seems to be the only one listed for the Bosch alternator. Good Luck

Dumb question: do you know if the alternator is getting the signal to, well, start alternating?
