R&R Center Bearing w/ Protective Cap

I am in the process of replacing both flex discs on an 85 300SD. I ordered the center bearing and carrier also, thinking I would do that "while I was in there". The rubber carrier looks good and bearing seems fine so I am tempted to skip it.
My question concerns the "protective caps" as described by the FSM that go on eithe side of the bearing (There is no C-clip on this model). The FSM states clearly that they should only be used once. Has anyone that has replaced the center carrier on a similar model run into this? Is it OK to reuse? When pulling the old and pressing on the new, do you do the cap(s) seperately or pull/push the whole assembly? I haven't been able to find any threads that discuss this.
