W126 Feuerloscher on W123 - Going to try to retrofit
Amazing find at the junkyard the other day: near the cash register are a bunch of fire extinguishers removed from cars before taking to the yard for parts. I happen to spot an extinguisher off a w126, including the red bracket that keeps the extinguisher strapped in place. THe extinguisher was even showing good, with the arrow pointing to green. I know the manager of the yard after buying there for years, and convinced him to sell it to me--he sold it to me for $5 total! Obviously he doesn't know the value of it to me, and just sees it as any old fire extinguisher. Amazing price considering these can usually only be gotten from Euro eBay. Not that I'd ever need to use an extinguisher during an actual car fire, but these Euro-only options are always a nice touch.
Now I'm hoping to follow in 2phast's footseps and retrofit this fire extinguisher to my w123 seats, since I believe the w126 and w123 seats were the same for certain model years (with the possible exception of the base tracks, which probably had a different bolt pattern for the two chassis'). http://www.2phast.com/500e/interior.htm I'm hoping this is simply going to be a matter of me drilling a couple of holes in the front of the seat base metal and using some self-tapping screws to attach the bracket. I might even need to bend the bracket a bit to get it to fit, but as soon as I get a chance I'll be looking into spending a couple hours on this install and posting up a couple of pics. If I do get it installed, my next step after that would be to get some like-colored fabric from somewhere on a parts car (possibly the carpet to the left and right of the center console), and using it to make my own cover for the extinguisher, similar to how the w201/w124 chassis had covers on the extinguisher. edit: spell check on feuerloscher (two dots on the letter o, too) Last edited by Sev; 08-08-2009 at 10:02 PM. |

Well guys, it was as easy as I thought it would be.
I used the w126 brackets, off which I needed to cut off two of the metal tabs, each with one hole in them, through which the screws attached it to the seat base. I drilled six holes (probably two or three more than I actually needed) to hold the fire extinguisher bracket to the base of my seat. The measuring and placement of these screws was the hardest part. It took me about an hour to do it. I then used six 10/32 - 1/2" machine screws and regular nuts to affix the bracket to the base. On the bracket, I used the lowest six existing holes (farthest away from the extinguisher, distance-wise), since using any of the upper holes (the holes near where the bracket bends in half) would have not given me enough clearance between the mb-tex of the seat, and the red plastic of fire extinguisher bucket. I also mounted the bracket such that the red bucket was only a couple of inches from the handle that is used to adjust the seat backward and forward, so I can have enough clearance for the extinguisher on the other side, and center it as much as possible on the seat. The w126 extinguisher is considerably larger than the w201 or later model extinguishers, or even the original w123 one, if there was one. Fire extinguishers are unnecessary, but Mercedes decided to include them as an option. It's a nice Euro touch that's more aesthetic and doesn't get in the way visually or functionally. I'm way more taken aback by the airbag in a W123. We don't see that over here.....

Anyway, for a guy like me who'se used to driving 190e and 300e, this steering wheel feels much more comfy to me, although purists would disagree . |

That gauge on the fire extinguisher is just a hair off the black line. The black line is the new position when delivered. The one I got for the Blue Bird is dead nuts on the black line and has been since 10/1983, which matches the build dates(components) of my car. That was a plus as I bought the fire extinguisher from Sixspeed, in Florida off his 1984 Euro SEC.
MyRed mtg bracket is a bit different than yours. Mine bolted right up to the existing holes in the seat(FE removed upon federalization), except the two screws on the front of the seat pan. Apparently when installed at the factory those two tabs were just shoved between the pan and the seat bottom rail(covered with the upholstery leather.

Looks good sev.
Hi Charlie BTW, 'Feuerlöscher' has an umlaut, can also be spelled oe = feuerloescher. Cheers Last edited by Teutone; 08-09-2009 at 12:21 AM. |
