Timing Chain

Hi!

Is the 2.5 diesel motor an interference motor? The chain broke or something...? Popped a small piece out of the valve cover. The valve train is not moving with the crank. Should I just put a timing chain in it? The car has 240,000 miles on it. 1991 300d good shape.

Thanks for your help.

Yes. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but bad news it is.

How fast were you driving? I broke mine doing 65mph. every valve hit a piston, the first and last piston really took a hard hit. cracked the side of the valve cover, and also cracked the head. broke 2 cam towers, and the rear rocker was bent to one side.

I just replaced since I was almost to 331K and didn`t want dig into it deeper. this was on my 617.

Pull your cover and you might find a broken cam shaft and cam towers, hope you luck out with an easy fix. don`t see too many 2.5 Diesel engines at the yards.
