I need to replace my radiator and want to do it myself. Are any special tools needed or precautions that I should have in mind. thanks, Philip |

Generally no special tools are needed. But, it would be very helpful to know the year and model of you car.

No special tools needed, but on the W123s and W126s be careful of the spring clips that hold the radiator to the core support and the fan shroud to the radiator. I don't know how, but one of them almost popped me in the eye once and that would have been painful and probably not good for my vision.

Assuming you have a 123, just a screw driver to take the hoses off, and to pop off the clips that hold the fan shroud on and the radiator on. There is a blue plastic plug on the bottom of the radiator that you can use to drain it.

and on the 126 you have to detach the oil cooler from the end of the radiator before removing it.

If it's a W124, there is a bolt on the bottom of the radiator that secures a clip for the trans cooler line.
Most recent MBs use clips for the radiator and the shroud, so it's just a matter of removing the clips and breaking the connections of the two radiator hoses, and the two trans cooler lines. Might want to have a line wrench for the trans cooler lines. If you have an engine oil cooler on the side of the radiator, you also need to remove the two clamps that hold the oil cooler to the side of the radiator. No need to remove the fan or the shroud, just lift up and push the shroud back toward the engine. Jim
